Hi. I will be in Crete during the third week of July. I would like to rent a car for 2-3 days in Chania, and return it when I get to Heraklion. An automatic drive, while nice, isn't necessary. What kind of price for the rental can I expect? Do I need to rent in advance if I can take a manual drive? Thanks.

It is usually advisable to rent in advance before you leave for vacation as far as price consideration.
I think advance reservations would not be vital in regards to a manual being available but automatics in Europe are a different matter.

Have you thought of getting the local buses. They run right along the north coast and are a lot more fun than trying to drive with funny greek road signs. Also much cheaper than a one way rental.

We are renting a car for 6 days in Crete (picking up in Heraklion airport and dropping off at the ferry port) from Anna Cars - quoted price 155 Euro. We had emailed several rental companies and Anna Cars was the first and only one to reply. No deposit required, they just wanted to our time of arrival . . . sounds like a very nice rental place . gave us their mobile phone number in addition to their office number. I would recommend contacting them. We thought of using the bus system, but then decided would be better to have a car since we want to investigate the smaller White Mountain area villages. What a coinsidence... I arrive to Heraklion port 3 weeks ago and was planning to rent a car. Saw Anna Cars delivering a car and ask the gentlemen ýif he could fix a car for me as well. His ister brough me a car after sometime waiting ( was very cold due to wind ) due to traffic. Very pleasent people. Car was OK(ish), price was good but the service was very friendly. So I recommend them highly. My favorite airline Aegean passangers are offered a discount at Hertz ( but I belive you pay a lot more than others !!! ) which I have used few times untill I found out local guys are also serving you good and cheeper. However in Athens, I was pleased to have a car from Avis which worth the money to the last dime.
I found it very easy to hire a car everywhere in Greece, and usually new cars.

annhig: I will be in Crete for 5 1/2 days, so I plan to use local buses for a few days, but also a car for 2-3 days for some added flexibility. Thank you though.
