Cote D'Azur in February?
As a cure for France withdrawal, I am thinking of taking a February trip to Nice and other large Cote D'Azur towns, based on the premise that (a) I'll be desperate by then, (b) everything will be cheaper and less crowded than in summer, and (c) I'm interested in museums and would love to have a trip with no driving (just trains). It's also good timing for my husband. But how bad (or good?) is the weather in February? And will too many places be closed?

Sometime early in February is Carnival in Nice, complete with a parade, so there is a lot of activity at that time.
The temperature will probably be in the fifties during the day. You will need to dress in layers. If the sun is out you might get by with a sweater.Night temperatures will proabably drop to the high forties.
Most museums will be open, though their hours will be a little shorter than summer hours, and some restaurants and hotels will be closed in some of the smaller towns.
There are areas of the Cote D'azure that will look closed for the season, but I don't think you will find that as much in Nice.

February would be an exciting time to be in Nice and a good time to see other parts of the region via train and bus. Crowds will be fewer (except at the Carnival events), and you should be able to find some good package deals. How long do you have? It would be nice to spend some time in Nice (for the museums), St-Paul-de-Vence, Cannes, and Grasse, now reachable by train from Cannes.
Start looking now for Nice hotels, given the Carnival crowds.

Ooops -- forgot about Carnival! I can't decide if that's a plus or a minus. Would you recommend using another town as a base (I know there are lots of threads on this so I will check those too)? We'd probably stay for just a week.

Might be a good idea to stay elsewhere and just go into Nice when you want. Cannes would be good for easy train access in both directions, as would Villefranche-sur-Mer. You can hit all the Nice museums by bus.

My favorite flowers, the Mimosa, should still be in bloom in Bormes-les- Mimosa, a medieval enclave with a port and Le Lavandou and everywhere around Cannes where they were first planted.
The weathwer is still decent in that area in February

I have friends with an apartment in Cannes and they go every February and love it. They love the excitment and the flavour of the season. You may want to check with others here but I think that is the month of all the sales. I know my friend comes home one of those months around then with loads of designer shoes and suits and I oooh and ahh but I haven't been Feb. YET. Have fun, I'm jealous!
