Cost of IDP- driver permit
Since there were so many responses to my original post I thought I ought to start a new one and give you what I learned.
With a basic AAA membership the cost of an IDP is $15 and the photo is $6 (cheaper than Walgreens for $12.99 without coupon). AutoEurope said they "highly recommended" that we get the IDP but it was not required. The agent went on to talk about being stopped by the police and their being able to read the permit in French. Much of what many of you said in your posts.
So my husband and I decided to bite the bullet and spend $42 to feel comfortable. Yes, travelers, we are spending thousands to go to France but we are able to do it by not spending on things we don't really need in order to do what we really want, which is to travel. Most of you responded with accurate, useful and informed information. Thank you so much for taking my little problem seriously.

Why did it cost you $42? And you don't have to be a member, it's the same fee, $15, for everyone. this isn't a AAA proprietary thing, they are authorized by the govt to be able to do this. the application doesn't even ask you your AAA membership number.
