cortina (dolomites) to varenna (lake como) by car in june. which in-between town to stay in?

planning 4 nights each in varenna and cortina for walking, sightseeing, photos, etc. we would like to stay in another northern italian town (not venice) for a few nights. any suggestions? another option for a 3rd place could be in germany, austria, or switzerland. just needs to be within 3 hours drive from cortina or varenna......

Stay in Castelrotto and then stop in Verona enroute to Varenna. Or, stop in Verona and stay on Lago Garda.

I would also say positively visit Verona, but then stay somewhere on Lake Guarda. Maybe Sirmione. If you want to drive a bit further, perhaps stay in Cremona.
