Cornwall amd Kent

OUr family of four including 16 and 18 yr old boys will be staying in Cornwall near Falmouth for four days. Anybody been there recently? Any suggestions for interesting excursions? We'll also be in Kent. We're doing Sissinghurst, but what would the boys like? Leeds Castle? Hever? Canterbury?

Cornwall is beautiful. There is an open air theatre carved into the side of the rocks at a place near Falmouth called Porthcurno. The theatre is called the Minack Theatre. It is a spectacular setting and the stage is carved further out than the seating so the sea is the backdrop. If the weather is good it is fantastic. Check with the local tourist information for performances etc. We took our boys there two years ago and they loved it. Admittedly they were only 13 and 15 at the time. Also take the boys to the northern coast if you can - Newquay. This is a surfers paradise and there are big breakers there. Nothing like the states I guess but nevertheless one of our most popular surfing areas. Another nice place is St Michaels Mount. If you walk out on the causeway you can walk up to see the castle - steep walk but the views of worth it. We always enjoy the walks along the coastal paths. It is very invigorating and the views are spectacular. Also you come across little fishing villages that are unexpected delights. If I think of anything else I'll let you know. E-mail me if you need any further info.

Had another thought. St Ives is very pretty. It has several good beaches and an art gallery - the Tate. It is also very popular with artists and you can often see them dotted around sketching.

Canterbury is a lovely old town--should them the very exclusive Kings School for boys that was founded by Henry VIII. They must know of the Canterbury Tales by now---there's a tourist show in town--yes, touristy but of some interest before exploring on foot. There's also a couple miniature steam trains in Kent---let me know if that's of interest and you want details. <BR>

My wife & I recently took a Baltic cruise which included a seven hour tour through Kent from London to Dover. Turns out we enjoyed that tour more than any other in the Baltic. The countryside in Kent is beautiful and we particularly enjoyed Canterbury. The cathedral has all sorts of interesting things that your boys will enjoy. Leeds Castle was not as interesting and if it's out of your way I would skip it. Somewhere along the way, I think it was between Canterbury and Leeds, we had lunch at a great place called the Ringlestone Inn. The food was pub style, very good, and the friendly servers kept bringing it on until we ate more than we should have. The inn itself is worth a visit, everything you imagine an English country inn should be, and the boys will be treated like royalty by the staff. Enjoy!
