Convenient accommodation between Milan and Lake Como

Will be traveling mid-morning on Saturday, October 1, 2011 from Tuscany Region towards Milan/Lake Como. We only have until early afternoon on Monday in this area as we are on our way to Lucerne via Train. We are planning to see the Duomo, the Last Supper painting in Milan and maybe just walk around the historic center for a short while, and grab a quick bite to eat. We will be arriving in this area with our rental car unless we drop it in/near Milan first (preference, if practical). Here are my questions:

1. Should we drop off the rental car and, if so where would be the most convenient Car Rental location (Hertz or Auto Europe...not sure yet)?
2. Need suggestions for a nice hotel (under $200/night) convenient to both Milan/Lake Como which is also convenient to transportation hubs for getting to both locations and the train station which will take us to Lucerne on Monday
3. What would you recommend for the best sightseeing plan in such a short time in the Lake Como area?

Thanks for your help!!

Thank you "traveler" I will check out the site for hotels soon. I'm still not sure about keeping the car until we get ready to leave Italy or dropping it off in Milan before we head to Como. We have the luggage issue to contend with and as long as there is not too much walking involved from the Car Rental company to the train and then to the hotel in Como, we would really like to drop the car.

I think a good solution should be to stay near Milan. I spent 2 nights at the hotel Concorde in Gerenzano, near Varese, a very cheap solution: www.hconcorde.com. You may reach the hotel by the car, they offer a free parking, If you prefer you can leave your car and go to Milan by train, from Gerenzano-Turate station to Milano Nord Cadorna takes just half an our and there's a train every 30 minutes: http://www.trenitalia.com/ The day after you may leave the hotel and go directly to Como, leave there the car and put your luggage at the "depodito bagagli" in Como train station.
