Considering day trips to Oxford, Cambridge -- enough to fill a day at each?

Hi everyone,
My wife and I are going to London at the end of November and have a two days free to do day trips.

After seeing "The Amazing Race," I'm interested in going to Cambridge.

I've had several friends recommend Oxford as well.

It looks like Oxford certainly will offer a lot we can do. We're mostly interested in walking around and sightseeing, doing some shopping in local shops and checking out some historical sites of note.

Someone recommended Brighton for a day trip, but I would think that would be geared more toward a summer day trip?

Feedback is most welcome!

I've been to both, as recently as September and loved them both. I saw that episode and annoyed my family to no end "I saw that - I was there - We went punting from the same place - I think that's where I wrecked the car'!!!
There's plenty to see and do in both places. I wouldn't do them in a row, if you have a choice, but even still - there's enough differences that'd you stil enjoy them that way. Go to the covered market in Oxford - it's great.

There's certainly enough to fill a day at both Cambridge and Oxford. However, I found that visiting both in the same trip was somewhat tedious (even for an academic!). How about Stonehenge or Bath for the second day trip?

Cambridge is a great day trip. Did it last Feburary. Left London mid-morning from King's Cross (actually took a local by mistake, but turned out to be very interesting since the last part of the trip was by bus through a number of little villages because of track repair work.) We strolled around Cambridge, had lunch in a great little tea shop, participated in a tour of the colleges conducted by a very knowledgable guide, had coffee and ginger bread cake to warm up after the tour, and we were back in London for a late dinner.

Either is fine for a day trip. My preference is Oxford, but Cambruidge was good, too. Plenty of things to see and do. Both are easily doable by train or bus from London. I wouldn't do them on adjacent days though.

What about Hampton Court?

There are tourist guide led walking tours in Cambridge which are very good and a Bus Friday in Oxford since it is more spread out. Canterbury is another wonderful day trip, as is Bath or Arundel. Take the trains---very simple, no parking mess.

Spent a week in Cambridge one year. Especially enjoyed a 'bell ringing' tour. Very unusual, but might only be part of a special week in summer. Making a brass rubbing was also interesting (allow 2 hours)
