Como to Luzern and back

As part of a trip to Northern Italy we are going to Spend 2 day's in Switzerland. Partialy to drop one friend off for her flight out of Zurich. We have tentativley chosen Luzern as a place to spend 2 nights due to the train connection to the airport in Zurich and it looks like there is plenty to do in the city to fill a day of touring. We are trying to determine what we can see/do on the trip up and back. We will be leaving from Como and returning to Milan - MXP. I have have started to read some guide books and it looks like there are plenty of choices - Does any one have any specific recommenndations?
Also any rec's on hotels in Luzern would be helpful.
Thanks
Aileen

Good morning, amdg
The rail part from Luzern to Milano via
Goschen/Andermatt is very senic except for the passage thru the Gottard Tunneland one stop might be LUGANO, tho in CH is an Italian City, small old
town area and worth a brief stop. A funiculare goes from the main sation down to the main old town area which is a few blocks square. Found it to be a very enjoyable city....As for hotels in Luzern, We have used the WILDEN MANN a number of times over past years..(www.wilden-mann.ch) is a four star hotel with 50 room and two
exceptional stube and ristorante. located about a ten min. walk from the
main Bahnhof and on the opposite side as the old town.. Another, tho we have not stayed there is the HOTEL DES BALANCES located on the river in the old town area. (www.balances.ch) is a three star hotel with 60 rooms..
Would also suggestl if a clear day to take the trip up to the top of Mt. Pilatus, there are two ways of ascending on up the incline railway at Alpnachstad and shortest by city bus to Kreins, a short walk and then by gondolas and cable car to the summit.
Pretty good little cafe atop, ideal for
a light lunch... Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..

Just stayed in Des Balances two weeks ago. If you decide to use that hotel you might want to consider asking for one of the riverview rooms (some have small balconies).
The hotel is well-located, staff are friendly, efficient, and excellent, and the buffet breakfast is extensive to include made-to-order omelets. Depending on your luggage load you could walk to the main rail station in 10 minutes max.

Wherever you choose to stay in Luzern you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for your advice.

We will have a car and will be driving up and back. Any other Ideas on places to stop along the way?

Thanks
Aileen

I have taken the Como-Luzern route many times and I have often thought that the castles in Bellinzona would be well worth a visit.
