There's a review of the Columbia on www.concierge.com that says the lobby has a grand staircase but the rooms are nothing much. They say room 112 is nice. It was once a US officers club. The place gets up & coming bands (in the bar I guess). It's near Hyde Park in Bayswater.

I stayed there several times when it was still the Officers' Club in London - the rooms were £7 double if you can believe it! but that was in the late 70's when a very nice hotel room in London was £15 to £20.
Have been back a few times - not to stay but just to have a drink for "old times sake".
The location is really great - directly across the street from Hyde Park and close to the Lancaster Gate tube station.
On Sunday mornings you can simply walk across Bayswater rd to the mile long art show and then end up at Speakers' Corner.
I tend to dislike the general Bayswater/Paddington area - but the Columbia is right on Bayswater RD and in the best part of that district.
Have been back a few times - not to stay but just to have a drink for "old times sake".

It is now April 2013. Do any of you have an update on this hotel? I understand the Union Jack Club is available to retired US military officers. Does anyone have any experience with the Union Jack Club?
