CNN votes Utrecht the worlds best cycling city

According to CNN Utrecht is the best city in the world for cycling. Not sure I would agree, since they don't include Groningen in their list - which is far better imho, or even the new city of Almere, which is extremely cycle friendly (about the only good thing one can say about the place ).

Anyway their report is based on the report by http://copenhagenize.eu/index/ which actually puts Amsterdam top.

CNN disagrees - blaming tourists on hire bikes for making it less pleasant to cycle there, they also include Portland Or in their list.

Thank you for this! I have toured 6 of the 20 cities by bike since I retired. 14 more to go.

Our daughter just spent a few weeks in Groningen. Her summary - bikes, bikes and more bikes. And we live in a cycling city (Ottawa).

Evidently no one checked out Davis, CA, which is the U.S. cycling capital.

Maybe it was left out because the city has already won the award? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWf5fbSUNAg
The Dutch seem to prefer Zwolle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRQSBiX0bEQ http://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/20...ner-is-zwolle/
Others in the list were.Eindhoven - Velsen - Enschede - Almere

Also I had trouble believing the high modal share they quote. I always hear Groningen has the highest modal share of bike journeys in the Netherlands: over 60%.

The Fietsstad award is an annual thing, so every year a different city wins. I think members of the Fietsersbond can vote.

Utrecht has a large university I think and that could add to the prevalence of bike trips.

It depends.

Rotterdam has a sizeable university, but the modal share there is around 30%. That's because the rationalized street grid after the war was built for cars, primarily.
