It would probably be wisest to take the train from Memmingen. It's only 27 Euros for the whole group, round trip, if you use a "Bayern Ticket" on the RE or RB trains for your daytrip into Munich instead. If you add up gas, parking, and the fare from somewhere else, I doubt you'll save either time or money over that price. Bayern Ticket works weekdays after 9 am, anytime on Sat or Sun.

Thanks again Russ!! As you can see, we took your advice and are staying in Memmingen where we found a nice little place called Pension Erb in town.
I did see this Bayern ticket in the guide books but for some reason, did not apply it to Munich.We will be travelling on a sunday, which makes it convenient, but can you tell me if we buy this ticket at the train station directly and if it good on any train, or just certain trains?
We only wanted to take the direct trains to avoid wasting time?

The Bayern ticket is good on the RE trains; buy it at any station, cheapest from a ticket machine. It's good on the RE (Regional express) and RB (Regionalbahn, the milk-run) trains. I believe the RE are the fastest and most direct option from Memmingen anyway, requiring no change of train; check schedules at www.bahn.de. On a Sunday, you can use them at any hour; technically, they're valid until something like 2 or 3 in the morning, as I recall, if indeed there are any trains still running at that wee hour, and if you would want to be on one of them then.

I think you'll like Memmingen's regular-little-town atmosphere.

There are two or three daily EC trains from Zürich to Munich stopping in Memmingen; you cannot use those with the Bavaria Ticket. All other train connections are RE/RB trains, on which the BT is valid.

Yes, of course. It is 2 Euro cheaper if you buy from the ticket machine instead of from the counter.
I think on a sunday you won't have a choice anyway - ticket counters in small town stations tend to stay closed on sundays (if not rationalized away completely.)

I'd second the above suggestions with the extra info that the Bavaria ticket is also valid on Munich public transport (subway, buses, trams, s-Bahn(suburban trains)).
