climbing stromboli
Hi I'm planning a trip to Sicily in September and am hoping to climb the volcano on Stromboli. I'd love to hear from anyone who has done this before to answer a few questions, how difficult a climb is it, do you need climbing boots (I've heard you can hire them ?) would you recommend the climb ? Thanks for your help

jennywren,
check out the virtual walk on this website http://www.educeth.ch/stromboli/virtual/index-en.html
also note that access to the summit is (or at least was) prohibited. http://www.educeth.ch/stromboli/beso...042003-en.html My Italian is not good enough to translate the ordinances. The English translation says that access is prohibited above 400 meters but the May 12, 2003 ordinance seems to say that the prior ordinance has been overturned.
I was on Lipari 2 weeks ago and tour operators were promoting day trips with a possibility to climb Stromboli - but I am not sure if you could climb to the summit. Was hoping to do the day-trip to Stromboli, but it was cancelled due to rough seas.

I climbed the Stromboly about a month ago up to 400m.
(concerning the May 12 ordinance, I understood it means that transgression/overturning of the 400m limit will now be prosecuted).
Ip to 300m, there is a smooth path. Then the last 100m are a bit more rough. It is a temporary path and it is more steep and slippery. Sports are sufficient, no need for bulky hiking boots.
But bring a torchlight (one per person) because the view is best in the dark. So you climb up before dusk and the rturn is in complete nighttime.
Nowadasys the view is not as spectacular as before the explosion of january and April but iy is still worth it. Above the 400m limit there is a very thin stream of red-hot lava cooling down into black lava rocks rolling down the mountain into the sea 400m below amid hot mist.

A day trip to Stromboli is much to be recommended even without climbing part of the Volcano. It is a lush and beautiful island, and there are great walking paths along the coastline around the populated areas.

We thought about it and decided not to -- last summer. But we did a full day trip to Panarea and Stromboli. You end up leaving Stromboli by boat about sunset and see wonderful explosions from the best direction once it is dark, before a return to Lipari around 11 or midnight (depending upon the current sunset time). Of course, I suppose others are right that the general explosions are not as big now as they were then.
Friends did the hike and said it was pretty steep and rugged at the end, but worth it. However, a burst from the volcano really scared the hell out of them, and showers of hot cinders came down just a few feet from them. They said even their guide was shaken by the event -- apparently not common.
