Classical Music Concert in Vienna

We will be in Vienna with our 18 and 20 year old boys on March 19 and March 20. We would love to attend a good classical music concert. We would love suggestions for the best way to do this, whether in a Parlor concert or in a great music venue like Musikverein or Konzerthaus, or in some other venue. We would like to know where the music will be the best and where the experience may be the best.

Thank you.

Steve

Hi Steve,

I fear that you may have left it a bit late, but here's the programme for the Musikverein:

https://www.musikverein.at/konzerte/konzerte.php#18

There are still tickets for the friday night concert [the 20th] by the Janoska Ensemble and the programme looks good - I would snap those up if I were you though the programme in the rather prettier Brahms concert hall also seems attractive. You can simply book the tickets on line - you then pick them up when you get there.

Another option would be an opera - here is the programme:

I don't think that you will get affordable tickets for the Staatsoper but there are tickets for Hello Dolly and My Fair Lady for the Volkoper which has a very good reputation.

Also here's the classical music programme, ℅ the Konzerthaus; they bizarrely have the UK Ukulele orchestra there on the Friday, but there are a lot more venues listed on the left of the website.

Finally you could also ask your hotel to recommend somewhere - there may be performances on at various churches while you are there, but we found Vienna to have fewer such concerts than other places we have been such as Prague and Krakov.

Good luck!

Here is the list of all classical performances for your dates. Some of them, like Schönbrunn and KurzSalon, are a little bit touristy. MozartHaus is a beautiful, intimate, setting, as are many of the smaller venues like Annakirche, Palais Palffy and Palais Auersperg.

Thank you, Annhig and Fourfortravel,

I bought tickets for a Mozarthaus concert because of the small, intimate setting! I'm assuming people generally dress up for these concerts?

Thank you!

The UKOGB isn't classical, of course, but it is a (very skillful) hoot. (And they did lead several thousand ukelele players in the Ode to Joy in the Albert Hall a few years ago).

Steve_P, attire at similar performances we have attended runs the gamut. My husband typically wears a jacket (no tie) and khakis or similar; I'm usually in a favorite skirt. In other words, "dressy casual," if that's the correct term. You will see many students in their best jeans, and many older attendees in their "Sunday" clothes, as well. Hope that helps.
