City with the Most Billionaires?

Interesting question on NPR Financial show last night - from Foreign Affairs journal which has trivia questions regularly

One of them was which city in the world has the most billionaires?

the choices were

A- New York City
B- Moscow
C- London

the most billionaired city now has 74 billionaires according to Forbes Magazine's annual listing.

I'd guess London (that's where all the Russian billionaires go, isn't it? Amoung the billionaries of many other nationalities)

If the question had not been multiple choice I would probably have said London - but having thought about Moscow I think that is the right answer

Actually, I thought the answer would be Dubai.

I think A - New York City. Where the top hedge funds managers/owners are based. It can not be Dubai because of the small population.

It is definitely Moscow.

What I don't understand is why anyone is surprised. Fabulous wealth is common in developing economies, it is not just a hallmark of the richest economies. There are neighborhoods in Mexico City where you can smell the money. Same with Sao Paolo.

Another trivia question: Which country has the most people out of Forbes list of the Top 10 richest people in the world?

And another: Who is the second richest person in the world?

Answers:
India
Carlos Slim (Mexico)

Well it is Moscow and i for one am shocked - not that that wasn't the city i picked out of the three choices because of the choices but it shows the rape of the resources of the oligarchs in Russia.

In 2002 Forbes said there were 4 billionaires in Moscow and now 73 or 74 - the first time NYC is not leading the parade.

And yes if you include London's residence Russian oligarchs then the number soars

Something's rotten in Moscow and i'm getting a good whiff of it over here.

I think it probably has a lot to do with the rampant gangsterism and illegality with which much of the money is made - as well as not paying taxes on it.

(I know the wealthy do this everywhere - but in the US and the UK there are many more laws and controls - and government officials are in far less fear of losing their lives of they try to enforce them.)

That statement makes absolutely no sense.

Given that holding this discussion makes little sense anyway, it's hardly worth commenting on the logic or reasonableness of an individual post.

Of course, that's what I have just done. We are now entering a recursive state. I'll be back yesterday.

Just for clarification. Dubai total local population are in thousands and not in millions comparing it to the three listed choices, NY, Lon and Moscow.

If you look at the Top 50 richest in the Middle East (with only 47 with $1 billion or above) only 10 persons from the whole of the UAE which Dubai is part of.

The post mention of 74 billionaires...

"Something's rotten in Moscow"

No. Something's rotten in the US.

Moscow's billionaires - and there used to be just a handful of them - were people who'd made their money by stealing state-owned commodities miners.

Now they're people who are raking it in on the back of a soaring oil (and therefore, gas etc) price. No different from any not very bent Saudi prince. They just all live in Moscow - where, BTW, their wealth is now cascading down through the population to create a seriously booming consumer market and greater distribution of oil wealth than in any Middle Eastern US protectorate.

Ah - the flimflanner 'trickle down' Reagan-Thatcher line.

something's rotten in Moscow IMO - the rape of the nation's resources by a few cronies of leadership it seems

meanwhile the trickle down thing means the average Moscovite can buy a bit more vodka?

I suspect there may be a few more moneyed folks than "Forbes" knows about in all three places, don't you, Pal?

That is, unless Tony Soprano is now reporting his mob-related earnings from prostitution, drug sales, loan sharking, and so forth to "Forbes."
