CITY suggestions for week-long Tuscany/Umbria base?
We are hoping to stay in Tuscany/Umbria for a week, and use the city as a base for exploring the area. We'd prefer to stay in a mid-size city. Any suggestions?
I know "mid-size" isn't very specific, but what we're hoping for is a city that's large enough that there will be many restaurants and cafes, markets, places to wander around, and possibly have several "traditional" tourist spots (e.g. churches, small museums, etc.). We don't want it to be TOO big, however, because we're planning on having a car & don't want the hassle of big city driving - it's for that reason that Florence has been taken off our list.
We're considering Assisi or Sienna. Any thoughts or recommendations?
Thank you.

Andrea, You have already picked the 2 logical best choices---merely split your time between those two. It is hard to cover both from the same location, and your criteria makes it even tougher. The only other possible option may be Montepulciano, but it is smaller than you want. Forget Lucca, it is a wonderful place but not central.

we just spent a week in a villa apartment in an area whose closest "large" town was Montepulciano, and loved it. It was also close to Pienza, Montelcino (sp?), Montechiello and others and we had a wonderful time touring all those walled hill towns. Plenty of vineyards, enotece (is that the correct pluralization of enoteca?) and wonderful, wonderful restaurants.
