Circumvesuviana -Sorrento to Naples Central Rail Station

Will this train be extremely crowded early on a Saturday morning? I will be traveling with 3 children and my elderly mother-in-law. I would like to avoid the crowds but also want to have an easy connection with the trains to Rome. Any other suggestions other than expensive taxis??

Train is pretty crowded on weekdays but that may be because of the commuter crowd.

I don't know what you consider expensive but you can get a driver to take you to the train station in Naples for 80-90 euro. Seems pretty cheap, considering the hassle of kids and mother in law, never mind luggage.

The Circumvesuviana trains are indeed the most convenient. The are several advantages to taking the CV train into Naples: 1) early Saturday morning 2) frequent departures from Sorrento to Naples and 3) very economical compared to a taxi. I was in Sorrento 2 weeks ago and traveled back and forth to Naples this way with my young child (age 4). In fact, her ticket was free so even better savings! The ramp up to the tracks is easy to access and you just walk across to get to the train (tracks 1 or 3). Since you will be traveling with your elderly mother-in-law, I would recommend getting a seat immediately upon entry for easy get-on/get-off access. I am not sure how old your 3 children are, but perhaps one could help with your mother-law-law (walk with her by her side). Upon arrival in Naples, you take the escalator up to the Piazza Garibaldi/Centrale section for the regular train departures. All in all, easy to negotiate.

If you don't need to be in Rome early you could catch the Marozzi bus at Sorrento's Piazza Tasso at 5pm and arrive Rome Tiburtina station at 8pm. Cost is approximately 19E per person. The luggage is stored underneath the bus so you don't have to worry about it until you get to Rome.

From Sorrento to Naples will be a lot easier with that brood than the other direction. You'll be getting on at the beginning of the line so should have no problem finding seats. And the station is small and easy to navigate. The other direction is much more confusing.
I wouldn't bother with $100 worth of taxi!

Hi MW,

You should be able to do it with no trouble if you tie two children to you and one to your MIL. Then tie one line between you and MIL.

I woould suggest this if you were the last five people on Earth.

I woould suggest this if you were the last five people on Earth.

But then one of you would have to know how to drive a train.

I agree with Grasshopper. We've done this is both directions twice and to Naples is definitely easier than from Naples.

From Sorrento you're at the beginning of the line and no school kids or people going to work.

You should be fine going in that direction.

The Marrozi bus is a great way to travel. You can meet the bus in Piazza Tasso and pay the driver. The buses are newer and very clean. In Rome the bus drops you off at the Tibutina Station, so I would have a driver meet you there. The website for Marrozi(Italian only) is:

Seems to me if you are going to pay 19 E a head for four people for a bus... you might as well hire a driver.

Joelleinitaly - The Marozzi bus price is for Sorrento to Rome not Sorrento to Naples. I don't think you can hire a driver for 76E(19Ex4). If you can, let us know where and everyone will quit taking the trains/busses between Rome and Sorrento.

Keep your receipt until the end of the trip as the Marozzi bus driver tried to accuse me of paying for one when I had paid for two.

"The Marozzi bus price is for Sorrento to Rome not Sorrento to Naples."

My mistake. I still don't think 3 hours with 3 kids on a bus is a good idea...but if money is an issue that seems to be the least expensive option.
