Cinque Terre to Nice
I am having trouble finding a train route from the Cinque Terre area to Nice, France. Does anyone know of a relatively direct train route? We haven't booked our hotel yet in France so I would also be interested in trains to Cannes or Monte Carlo as well.

You should be able to get a schedule with only one change (generally in Genoa), taking just over 5 hours if you pull them up at: http://www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml
But if you are looking too far into the future, schedules might not be fully listed yet. To get representative schedules look at schedules a week or two away, and figure that similarly convenenient things (though maybe not at hose exact times) will also be available further in the future.

YOU CANNOT BOOK TO NICE!
That's because the Italian Railways website www.trenitalia.com can't sell tickets for the Ventimiglia-Nice local trains, and for some years now, all the Italian trains have terminated at the border at Ventimiglia and you've had to switch to a local train (every 30 minutes, journey 48 min, fare 7 euros) for the last bit.
So, it's easy enough, but you have to book like this:
Step 1, book from anywhere in Italy you like, such as Monterosso in CT, to Ventimiglia at www.trenitalia.com from 19 euros if you book in advance.
Step 2, but a 7 euro Ventimiglia-Nice ticket at the station at Ventimiglia when you get there.
But this isn't quite the end of the story...
From 14 December 2014 there will be one direct daily Milan-Genoa-Nice-Marseille train reinstated, run by Thello, a subsidiary of Trenitalia. It's an afternoon (15:10) departure from Milan,Genoa depart 16:56, reaching Nice 19:55 and Marseille 22:29.
This will be bookable at www.trenitalia.com as well as www.thello.com - so you WILL be able to book from anywhere in Italy to Cannes, Nice or Monte Carlo again, but only from 14 Dec 2014 onwards, and only if you're happy using an afternoon departure with evening arrival, using this one new train.
They'll add two more Milan-Genoa-Nice trains as from (probably) April 2015, so it'll get even better then.

adding to Man in Seat 61's comments - yes things once were much better with a few daily trains Nice-Ville to Genoa and Milan and an overnight train Nice-Ville to Venice and one to Rome but they were scrubbed in some snafu between the Italian and French railways so all trans-border trains were cut, necessiatating a change of trains at Ventimglia (except a weekly Nice-Moscow sleeper train which I think does not take local passengers).
From the 5 Terre take a regional or IC train to Genoa, then a regional or IC train to Ventimgilia and then as Man in Seat 61 says to do.
If you can't get a 19 euro fare son't worry as these regional and IC train fares normally are lower than say high-speed trains in Italy - no need to buy regional train ticket ahead of time at all - you cannot reserve a seat on them anyway and you will save no money by buying ahead online. IC trains you can save money on.
For loads of great info on Italian trains check out these fine IMO sites - Man in Seat 61 who posts above his commercial site - good advice on discounted tickets - and www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
Though you could go by all regional trains and just buy that flat-fare ticket in any Cinque Terre station IC trains are faster and more comfy and you can get discounts on them if booking in advance to get the limited in number seats sold at those low prices on each train. Expect to take most a day on this slow-slow train route to Nice.

If you want to check on cheap flights check out Pisa's International Airport or Genoa to Nice - Pisa and Genoa are short enough train rides from the 5 Terre. but I guess with Schlepping out to the airport, etc you would not save so much time.
