Cinque Terre Or Florence/Uffizi Gallery

I'll have a day in Tuscany on my Med Cruise. I have narrowed my options for the day to either Cinque Terre Or Florence/Uffizi Gallery. ( I was in Florence 2 years ago and loved it, but had no time for the Uffizi) I just looked at photos on Webshots of Cinque Terre and it is gorgeous. I do love art too, especially european. So, what would your choice be?

I understand they are totally different. I would really love to do both if I had a second day. The Cinque Terre trip seems to be a good part by boat

More info, I'll be there Sept 4th, 2007, I am early 50s and can do walking. The cliffs don't scare me. Cinque Terre reminds me a little of our CA coast and Big Sur but with the charming little villages.

I guess what I am really asking is just for people to share their experiences with either or both.

Coxbox, thank you. It does seem from your post that I wouldn't be disappointed with either choice.

Coxbox is totally right, two very different things. So it is a personal choice, I would choose the Uffici and I would add some strolling in Florence.
The beauty of the 5 Terre is relaxing and walking up and down the trails, for that I would imagine that some time is needed. At least for me. I loved the 5 Terre in the time that there were less tourists around...but lots of people love it the way it is.

You really can't go wrong with either option. Even though I live on the ocean in Southern California, there is something unforgettable about hiking the Cinque Terre from fishing village to fishing village. The terrain is similar to hiking Big Sur or Catalina Island and in some ways a Mediterranean version of hiking the Napali Coast in Kauai because you're so close to the water.

If I had to select one museum in which I could die in peace it would be the Botticelli Gallery at the Uffizi. There is simply no replacement for being in the presence of great art.

With that said, if I were you I would go to Cinque Terre because it is a more unique experience, because you've already been to Florence, and based on what a friend of mine who just returned from both locations said, the lines in Florence are horrendous and there are no lines to hike.

There certainly are lines in Cinque Terre, esepcially in early September. It's jampacked with tourist.

Some questions to ask yourself, hpeabody, is how you will feel if Sept 4 is 90 degrees Farenheit or more. There isn't much to do in Cinque Terre when it bakes. Also, how will you feel if you arrive in Cinque Terre and don't see the pictures you saw, but instead see mobs of tourists?

Just to make your choice more difficult, the Uffizi is one of the least enjoyable museums in Italy, as far as I'm concerned. Not only is it uncomfortably packed with people -- including loud tour groups -- the artwork is difficult to see because of the way it is framed and hung. (You often see little else than the reflections of the mobs of tourist in the glass.)

For me, I'd pick Firenze, but I probably wouldn't go to the Uffizi. I'd head to Museo San Marco and some other places, perhaps even take a bus up to Fiesole. I presume your Med Cruise doesn't force you to stick with going to the Uffizi.

PS: Are you required to pick in advance? I'd want to know what the weather was that day.

How many hours do you have in that one day??? I think the Cinque Terre could consume more time than the Uffizi. If you've mis-judged the time it takes to get from one viiiage to the next (or take a wrong turn, like we did), you may have trouble getting back to your ship in time. Also getting to/from the Cinque Terre can be difficult & you could hit a major traffic jam.

Personally, the Cinque Terre or Florence is the last place I would like to find myself on Sept 5 - too crowded for me.
