A friend and I are considering Iceland for this year but I need to know what the situation is with cigarette smoke. I am a lifelong non-smoker but I have suffered serious lung problems in recent years and I can't be cooped up in rooms with a lot of smoke. I did some googling and found one web site saying there is a smoking ban in Iceland, but then I found another site saying it's a smoker's paradise. There were no dates so I couldn't tell which was more current, I hope it's the former.
If anyone has been to Iceland recently please let me know the status. Thanks.

Smoking in bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels, buses etc has been banned in Iceland since June 2007.
They are apparently considering making tobacco a prescription drug there too.
Thanks hetismij2, that's the info I need.
PM - we were there in 2008 and I don't remember its being problem at all; although i don't have your health problems, i am very sensitive to tobacco smells so i would have remembered if it was.
Have a great time!
I hate smoke. We were there in November and I don't recall it being an issue anywhere - although we aren't club hoppers so it might have been more frequent there. Certainly didn't notice residual smell at any coffee houses during the day or at any of the restaurants we visited.
I'll give you my experience, just to show the flipside.
I was there in 2008 and despite the smoking ban being law, I was confidently told by a couple of guys that were smoking outside a bar, that as the night wore on, everyone would be smoking indoors.
True to their word, as the time reached about 2am and all the patrons were suitably lubricated and numerous, people started lighting up in the bar and the bar staff began handing out ashtrays...
Don't think it'll be a problem unless you're going clubbing/drinking until the early hours as i never saw anyone smoking in restaurants or hotels etc. so you can no doubt avoid it.
