Church Dress Code -- Barcelona, Lisbon
We're getting ready to leave for a European cruise with ports of call in Barcelona and Lisbon. We'll spend a couple of days in Milan before the cruise.
I've read about the dress code in Italian Churches, and we'll avoid shorts and sleeveless tops in Milan, but I'm wondering if the dress code is the same in Barcelona and Lisbon. We're planning to go to La Sagrada Familia and possibly Santa Maria de la Mar or La Seu in Barcelona, and to Geronimo Monastery in Lisbon.
Thanks for your help!
Annette

Yes the catholic churches of Spain are just as reserved and well behaved as they are in Italy. So no shorts, flip flops, funny hats, bare arms, stomaches, knees etc etc.
Think going to see a wealthy great aunt

covered shoulders; modest dress - knee length skirts and/or shorts for women. our teens wore knee length shorts with no problem. Would you wear a pareo, swimsuit coverup, running shorts or tank top to church here?? I think not!

I was last in Barcelona 2 years ago so things may have change but:
La Sagrada Familia: no dress code - it's still under construction and I'm pretty sure it's not consecrated yet.
La Seu: Knees and shoulders covered.

Portugal is a VERY conservative Catholic country. You don't even see Lisboetas wearing shorts on the street let alone in a church.
You can get away with "cruise attire" in Caiscais, but not in Lisboa.
And it is Jeronimos Monastery, not Geronimo.

Thanks to all -- this was just what I was looking for!
We wouldn't wear a tank top or running shorts to church here, but we do wear nice sleeveless blouses. Texas isn't known for it's religious conservatism, though (except for the fundamentalist Mormons out in West Texas, of course!) and I just wanted to make sure we were appropriately respectful in someone else's church.
(and that includes getting the names straight -- thanks, Thin)
Cheers,
Annette
