My wife and I (late 60s) are toying with the idea of spending a week in mid December in Rome or perhaps in Vienna. (Sorry if this is a duplicate listing, I had another one that looked like it went away.)
We have been to both cities before. We have spent several Christmas seasons in the German speaking areas and we really enjoy the Christmas markets and decorations. I know there is more of that in Vienna.
My question for you experienced Rome travelers is what we can expect in mid-December in Rome other than the obvious attractions like St Peters, Forum, Colliseum, etc? Do they have Christmas markets decorations and things like that similar to those areas North of there?
I know there are some Fodorites out there who have been there and done that who can answwer our queestions. Thanks in advance for your comments and opinions.

We spent the between Xmas and new years in Rome last year and loved it! Lots of decorations, but warm enough to sit outside for eating and drinks!
