Hi all.......leaving for Munich Nov 30th to once again visit the Christmas markets. 2 nights Garmisch...1 Salzburg AS..... 2 nights Rothenburg........2 nights outside of Munich. We have our favorite restaurants in all but Salzburg AS. Would like a don't miss recommendation for there...... Preferably a Mom and Pops place. We will have a car so restaurant can be short way outside of town.

There is a restaurant in Salzburg that has been serving food since the year 810.....that is not a typo....810. The name is St Peter Stiftskeiler. It is not a mom and pop shop and has rooms for banquets but neat to say you ate in a place that has been serving food that long at same spot. I believe it is oldest restaurant in Europe. The web site has the menu and info. Salzburg is a great city.

We have done the Christmas markets many times. The grand opening in Rothenburg is so small town hokey, it is fun. Try to make that if you can. We always eat at least one meal at the Reichs Kuchenmeister Hotel restaurant. Great food.

When our family visited Salzburg we stayed at Haus am Moos, an easy 10-15 minutes drive outside of Salzburg's Old Town. We dined at Reiterhof Moos, a gasthaus just up the street from where we stayed. Very Austrian, very good, and very "mom and pops."

I a gree that you should not miss the St Peters Stiftskellee, right behind the Spund pf Music grave yard (where the Von Trapps hid from the Nazis). They have two restaurants with different menus and prices. The one upstair is the Mozart concert, formal restaurant. The one in the celler is cheaper and more casual.

The "cemetery"scene was filmed on a Hollywood sound stage, not in or around "Petersfriedhof", which is the grave yard referenced.

I suppose you could say the Petersfriedhof inspired the set, but everything is inspired by something. I don't even find the recreation all that similar. It was certain not a recreation in any sense.
