Christmas in Rome, itinerary help lease

Jump to last reply

Hi everyone, my fiance and I are going to Italy for the first time in December for our honeymoon. We’ve already booked plane tickets and hotels and now need to plan the details of the trip. I’m doing a lot of research online and using the Fodor’s and Rick Steves books. But I just can't find much info on how to plan a Christmas trip.

12/18 – Fly into Rome and take a train to Florence
12/19 – Tour Florence
12/20 – Day trip to Pisa and Luca
12/21 – Day trip to Cinque Terre (if weather is horrible, then stay in Florence)
12/22 – train to Venice
12/23 - Tour Venice
12/24 – Train to Rome
12/30 – Fly back to US

I have a lot of questions, but please let me start with Rome.

1. We really want to go to the Christmas Eve midnight mass at the St Peter’s Basilica. I’ve googled everywhere but didn’t find anything solid. Does anyone know how to reserve tickets? Do we still have a good chance to get the tickets now? I know it’s a very popular event with limited seats.

12/24 – Get some snacks and munchies to put in our room before the stores close for holiday. Walk over to Vantican City for midnight mass hopefully.
12/25 – Everything is closed, so we’ll probably walk around see sights not in the museums: Spanish steps (see life-size presepi), Trevi fountain, heart of Rome walk (Rick Steve’s)
12/26 – I understand it’s St. Steven in Italy and the trains run on a reduced schedule. Is it possible to take a day trip to Pompeii on this day? I can’t find info on Pompeii’s tourist website about their holiday schedule. I read some people recommend Pantheon for midnight mass, but we feel Vatican could be a life-time experience. Is it worth the trouble?
12/27 – ideally we’d like to start our Roma Pass on this day and see all the recommended sights. This day we could do Colosseum/Forum/Paletine Hill, Capitol Hill, Pantheon
12/28 – One whole day for Vatican museums and things, dome climbing
12/29 – Borghese Gallery, National Museum of Rome, Baths of Diocletian, San Giovanni, St Maria Maggiore,
12/30 – walk around the neighborhoods, maybe visit the markets, outdoor iceskating, jump on the plane at 9pm.

If 12/26 is closed in Pompeii, then maybe we’ll go on 12/27. And do the walking around markets and things on 12/26 and start Roma Pass on 12/28.

Is this a reasonable plan?

Thank you so much for your knowledge!
