I just got our booking for our week September stay in Tuscany. We arrive FCO on Friday and do not check into apartment until Saturday. We were going to do Rome/Florence/Tuscany but because we were able to book apartment that we wanted we have reversed everything. We will need one overnight stay and a pick up of car rental. Which place would be the best for our first night after a long haul. Once I get this I can make the train arrangements. We will check out of apartment the next Saturday so need to organize so that rental place is open. We are used to driving overseas, do you think that it would be better to do Florence or would Sienna be the best choice. Which ever don't want to be lugging suitcases for so very far. Thanks and I look forward to any comments or advice.

Where are you staying, in Chianciano Terme? And are you training there from Rome?
Don't quite understand where you will be lugging suitcases.
We are staying at LaFoce. I was speaking of car rental office and train station not being far apart. But whatever it takes for sure. We will get into Rome FCO and my thoughts are to immediately when four of us meet up to catch train to town that has rental car, a nice restaurant for our first evening together and a decent hotel. We are used to overseas travel so I thought perhaps Florence for car but then we don't need to be stressed out on our first moments into this holiday either.
So glad you are staying at La Foce!
I've stayed there several times, and it is great. What house do you have?
One option is to go directly there, as they have overnight accommodations. Email Benedetta Isidori to see what is available.
Mist people on this forum would say train to Orvieto and get a car there. You could also of course spend the night there, as it is a lovely cathedral and town.
From your third sentence, I get the idea that two parties will meet at FCO. From there you want "to catch train to town that has rental car, a nice restaurant for our first evening together and a decent hotel."
From FCO, this town would be Rome.
From Rome, there are trains everywhere.
However, to me, this all seems like a bit much. Why not rent the car at FCO and skip the train all together?
Four people renting a car at FCO seems much simpler, and appears to entail a lot less stress and dragging of luggage, than four people leaving FCO, getting to Roma Termini, getting a train to some town which you have yet to chose, then staying there and renting a car in the morning.
It's only two hours and 20 minutes from FCO to LaFoce.
I think it's insane to go from FCO to Rome to get a train to Orvieto, or anywhere else, just to not drive out of FCO.
How do you intend to get to Rome from FCO? Train or taxi or car to train?
Then train to Orvieto, then taxi from station to your hotel, eat, sleep, taxi to car rental, all to go less than another hour in morning?
I'm not getting it.
If you really really don't want to drive upon arrival, and since you would have to go to Rome anyway, spend the night in Rome.
But I find it much easier to drive from FCO than out of Rome.
If you spent the night in Rome, you could train to Chiusi/Chianciano Terme at your leisure and pick up a car there. Very easy.
It may be insane if you are used to driving in Rome but there is no way that I am going to put my DH behind the wheel of a car on Friday in Rome. So I suppose I will do some more research.
Taconictraveler I actually read some of your reviews and thought it looked like an incredible place. They have been wonderful to work with and so far couldn't be happier about the location. I showed it to my friends one night and said this is the place we have to stay, I just feel it. That week was available for Beco. I haven't been to Tuscany in over 10 years, my DH has not been to that part of Italy and our best friends their first trip. A few years ago we introduced them to the Luberon. I always feel blessed when I can help plan trips that bring joy and memories. It will be fun and with the help of Fodors I always plan the best trips.
DRive to Orvieto day one fom FCO and spend the nite. Next day see Civita and then drive to La Foce---easy drive.
No one, including me, said to drive in Rome.
FCO is nowhere near Rome. One must use a taxi or train to get from there to Rome... oh, never mind.
OK, wait; I can't let it go.
returntoyourseat, as per Bob's suggestion, are you willing to drive from FCO to Orvieto?
If so, why not, I guess. Me, I'd keep going the extra hour.
I don't find Orvieto that great to drive into. One could park at the bottom of the hill and escalate, bus or taxi up. It does involve moving luggage, which I understood as part of the problem you were considering, returntoyourseat.
Well I suppose we could consider driving from FCO. I automatically think FCO is Rome...on the tail end of trip we want to spend a couple of days in Florence and Rome for a few days before getting hotel at FCO for flight home. Just a bit of planning. Bear with me guys....I will get it together...
Bobthenavigator - Civita looks beautiful. Now to break the news to my husband. Thank you for your help. I still have to make some reservations for Florence and Rome. Do you think that possible to return car at Florence and then we will do the train rest of trip. We do enjoy train travel.
Yes, but do it at the Florence airport which is NW of town and just off A-1 loop, so no town drivng.
You are getting all good advice here, it's just a question of choosing.
You would be well served to follow the advice that says pick up a car at FCO, but I might go all the way, and spend the night at one of La Foce's B&B rooms, if available. If you love La Foce as much as we do, you will want all the extra time you can get. There are country roads in the estate, lovely walks, the garden to see, cooking classes, and be sure to eat dinner there if they are offering it.
OTOH, I love Orvieto, but have to agree that parking there can be mysteious, as it's all underground, as far as I know, but Heck what are holidays for except to get lost, and confused and laugh a lot about it later on Fodor's?
Take a look at the otherr houses at La Foce. Benedetta Isidori, the manager, can tell you if any are open, and the garden is open Wed. Afterrnoons now I think.
Let me know if you have any questions about it, or the area. There are great Fodorites who know a lot about the area.
I am just now online and looking at my options. I will email Benedetta tonight. My friend and I are absolutely doing a cooking class, while the guys hang out.
Car pick up at FCO is sound advice, as is the staying the night pre check in at LaFoce. I am running into a few road blocks on when we leave LaFoce with hotel bookings. We will have five days to see Florence and Rome. A
Many thanks
