Chester - inside or outside thewall
We will be driving to Chester and I'm wondering if we should book accommodation outside the wall and walk in or if we should not worry about driving/parking and book something inside the wall. Any suggestions for a family of four? (prefer B&B)

Hi there. My husband and I will be driving to Chester also in June this year. We hadn't thought about whether or not we would stay inside or outside the wall... is there a reason why you wouldnt stay inside the wall? I have yet to do some big reading on Chester so don't know a huge amount about it just yet. Will be interested to see what responses come from those more travelled.
Hi,
I've stayed in Chester on two trips and there are numerous B&B's ranging from reasonably priced to outrageous. One nice place was called Buckingham House. It's located right next door to the youth hostel(which I've stayed at, but it's just okay) and had nice airy rooms (some with private bath), and the lady who ran it was very helpful. For instance, I wanted to stay an extra night, but her place was booked so she did all sorts of phoning around for me, and finally fixed up one of her private family rooms for my mother and I at a reduced price. She also recommended some good places to eat.

We stayed at the Chesire Cat in Christleton, a village just a short distance outside of Chester. A taxi from there to the city center was very reasonable. Our reasoning was that Chester was our first destination --translation: our first experience with driving on the left--and we did not want to navigate city traffic on our first day. I believe we payed 59 GBP for a large, en suite room. There was also a pub downstairs.

The parts of Chester that you really want to see are almost all pedestrianized, so you can't just drive about. xxx's suggestion of the cheshire cat is a very good one, we stayed a little further down the road from there at a very nice hotel but I can't recall the name just now. There is a park and ride facility a short distance from either , cheaper than a taxi and very accessible.

Stay outside. There is ample and adequate parking outside the city which isn't really geared for your driving within its boundaries and the walking is much nicer. The place I have stayed, twice, outside the walls, is the nearby Travellodge, an American style hotel/motel that comes in at less than 40 pounds per night for two. It has all the amenities you want and the benefit is, if you are touring, you can book from one area to a Travellodge in another area for the next night and see the country relatively cheaply that way.
