Hi, it looks like JFK-CDG is operated by Air France. I'll need to check in with Air France (Terminal 1 JFK -- Delta uses Terminal 3). I called them and they confirmed this. Does this sound right?

The FCO-JFK is confusing me. According to FCO's website, the new terminal 5 applies to Delta and it's been in use since May 3. However Delta says use Terminal C. Which is the right terminal to use in this case?

I am not sure I am answering exactly what you are getting at, but Leonardo da Vinci airport (FCO) isn't so large that 'C' versus '5' (?seems unlikely?) could possibly make a difference if you give yourself the recco time prior to flight. It is not like Dallas or Denver in size.

It appears there is indeed a Terminal 5 at FCO.

It doesn't have gates, but simply a separate building for check-ins for US airlines. You can go straight to T5, or there are shuttles from Terminal C. After check-in you'll be bused again back to Terminal C to board your plane.

Thanks for your help and gosh, what joy about FCO.

I'm being extra careful because I'm traveling with my parents. The last thing I want to happen is to have terminal confusion when they are around me while the three of us figure out how to get from one place to another.

Yes, 111op as soon as you add parents to the mix when you are traveling, there are moments when any kind of confusion feels like it could, indeed, be terminal...been there, done that!

According to the FCO map, the new terminal 5 (opened May 5) is some distance from the train station and Terminal C.

This is a case where a taxi or car service would be especially worthwhile, so you can avoid having to haul baggage on and off the shuttle from Terminal C to Terminal 5.

Thanks for the SlowTrav thread. I think that I should ask my shuttle service to pick up earlier. Right now they are supposed to come at 10:30 for a 1:15 flight. I'll see if I can move it to 10 instead.

It seems to me that extra time would be needed only if the driver does not know to take you directly to Terminal 5. You'd surely need it if he were to drop you at Terminal C, though.
Drivers should know where they are going now that the new terminal has been operating for a while, but I'd still aim to arrive more than two hours in advance of flight time just in case. Buen viaggio.

Thanks. I guess you're right in that once I've checked in I've quite some time to get to the gates. So maybe the extra time is not needed. I'll think about it then.

I fly to Rome everyweek and just got back last night. The deal on terminal 5 is this. You are to check in and do security at terminal 5 for ALL outbound USA flights. After clearing security and immigration, you board a shuttle back to terminal C where I am happy to report they FINALLY finished the escalators that will take you topside to your flight.(For weeks, one has had to wait for one of four elevators to get up to your plane.)

Terminal 5 has covered dropoff which is nice if its raining unlike the usual terminal C. The place looks more like a glorified warehouse but there are some shops and a few places to get a coffee,etc. but you will still be able to get your dutyfree shopping and other stuff at the main terminal C when you get there. Have fun!

Wow, you fly to Rome every week (from the USA)?!

In your experience do you think extra time is needed, or two hours are ok even with this T5-C transfer?

At Fco, I might add some extra time depending on what month you are flying. In the summer months, it can get brutal waiting to get through security although this past trip seemed to have a shortened line.
FCO is a fun airport for waiting for a flight as there are many options for passing time-getting one last gelato,dutyfree,various high end shops,bookshop and Italian food souvenirs,etc. Terminal C is one big circle so it is easy to get around. If you travel during the "peak months" I would allow 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Traffic in the morning is always horrible so allow extra time on the road from downtown Roma to FCO.

111op-I just reread your comments about the private car and traveling with your parents. If you have a 1:15 flight you should probably allow more time.You usually start boarding an hour before so if you want the overhead bins near your seat,bathroom stop before boarding along with the other usual stops-leave around 930am so you are not rushed.

Hi dutyfree, we were talking about this last week on another thread. At one point, it sounded as though the security check in Terminal 5 was just for US-based airlines, but I just want to confirm that it's for ANY flight going to the US (I'll be flying from Rome to JFK on Alitalia).

111op, I always allow 3 hours at FCO, even for early-morning flights. Better safe than sorry! And as dutyfree points out, there's plenty of shopping to do if you are so inclined. Just be aware that an English paperback will cost a fortune. A couple of years ago, I was at the airport waiting for my flight and really wanted something to read on the way home. Seems to me I paid around 13E for a paperback!
