Cheapest way from London to Italy

Hi,
We've only been home since 3 June and here we are making more plans! But of course you have to do so with air travel. We have a flight from DFW to LGW where we will stay for 5 nights and visit a friend - then we need to get to Italy - and we are flying home from Rome/Zurich later on.
I have checked out Easy Jet and the times are not good for the London Rome connection. (Leave at 6:40 AM or 16:55 PM) That's to Ciampino - where you have to get a shuttle and hook up with the subway about 9:00 or so at night. Kinda scary.
Any other suggestions? We are really wanting to start farther north and work down to Rome. My husband even said he would drive this time IF I would route him through little towns. (hah!) But out of Milano would not be good and that's the only other place that you can get to from London GTW.
I have checked "Which Budget" or something like that - no luck there either.
Help!

If you want to start further north then EasyJet do a flight from London Luton to Turin that leaves at 09:15 and gets in around lunchtime.
Also, RyanAir do a Stansted to Pisa that leaves at 12:35, arriving at 15:45. They also do a flight to Milan (disguised as Bergamo!) at 11:30, arriving at 14:30.
The possibilities are endless )the above was after 2 minutes searching) but you don't state exactly when you wish to travel.

Although I've been a big fan of Easy Jet, I'm now looking at some flights with BMI between London and either Venice or Milan. They are better times than Easy Jet and just as cheap if booking way in advance. What's more they fly out of Heathrow which is easier than some of the other London airports.

We're doing Stansted-Ciampino on Ryanair at 8:30 AM, $50.00 per ticket one way incl all fees.

Thanks for the responses.
I was just rambling and didn't post a very good explanation!
We will arrive in London on 4 Oct and spend 3 to 5 nights - so we'll be leaving about the 7th or 8th or even 9th if the flights are significantly cheaper.
Then we fly back on 24 Oct from Rome.
Since we are going to end up in Rome, I hated to go there first thing - but don't know anything about Milan's Linate airport - and am about to do a search on it to see where and how it's located. I'd love to see some of the lake areas around there - and Will wants to be able to drive to some little towns between there and Rome. We are booked at a couple of places - Proceno (Lazio) and Venafro (Molise!) which are off the beaten path. But the rest is all to be figured out. We are compromising - he's tired of churches and museums and big cities - I want to have at least 3 more days in Rome. So I have to find him some nice scenery!
I'll check into BMI and also Ryan.
I love the idea of going to Pisa - that would put us in a low-traffic area (I think).
I didn't even consider Stansted - don't really know where it is. Can you get there by public trans from London?
AR - I don't know how you found all that good stuff.
Oh another problem - I can't log in to Easy Jet to set up a password, the page won't load. Any suggestions?
Here we go again!

From London there is a Stansted Express train which runs from Liverpool Station.

If you fly into Milan's Linate airport, you can pick up your car right there. Same with flying into Pisa. And with either, you should be able to drop off in Rome at the end.

I assume the URL you are using for EasyJet is www.easyjet.com/en is this correct?

Linate is a lesser-used (than Malpensa)airport that seems to handle mostly intra-European flights.

Good luck and have a great trip.

Try looking for flights at www.whichbudget.com. You can find which budget airlines fly between any combination of cities.

I have flown with BMI from Heathrow to Milan Linate several times, it is much closer to city centre, small and quite convenient.

Thanks so much for the info about the airports. I had thought it would take hours to get to another town to make the EZ Jet connections.

Yes, Intrepid, that is the website, and I can do everything on it - until it's time to "buy" the ticket. I have to go at that point to "log in" and when I go to that page it won't load. But I'll try again - my computer is old and runs out of RAM quickly.

LAWoman - if we fly into Rome, that is the way I want to go! 8:30 AM is much more civilized than 6ish.

I hadn't even considered flying out of Stansted. I think I need to go to the website and check out the directions to get to their alternative airports.

Thanks again - I'll be posting a trial trip itineray and begging for opinions and suggestions in just a few days!

Cheers,

Brahmama / Carol

Ryanair have the most comprehensive flight schedules to Italy of the budgets - they fly to numerous cities. Where are you staying with your friend? Gatwick is way south of London, whereas Stansted is north. If you're in London, either would suit you.

Hi Jean,
I am checking out Ryanair.

Our friends are from the US, but rent an apartment in London every year for the first two weeks in October. We just thought it would be fun to be there when they are there and take in a show and dinner etc with them. However they will be staying in a high-rent apartment in Mayfair! We are budget travelers and won't be staying close to them.
You're right - if we are leaving from London proper, it won't matter which airline we leave from.
We are thinking now of flying from Rome into Milano and then taking a train over to Lake Como and staying there 3 days before our already booked trip in Venafro. We will attend a grape harvest there - if the grape cooperate!

We won't have much luggage but my husband is big and tall (6'3" and 250 pounds) and I need to be sure he can fit in the seats! I need to check out the comfort comparison of the airline too. I'm thinking that Ryanair will have more room. Am I right?
