My fiancee and I are planning a trip to London for our honeymoon in May 1999.
We were thinking about staying in Bayswater at either Kingsway Hotel or the Ashley Hotel. Has anybody stayed there? They are
in Norfolk Square near Paddington Station. Fodor's recommend staying at the London Elizabeth which is also in Bayswater. The description of the London Elizabeth also states that it is steps "from rows of depressing, cheap hotels." Does anbody know if this is refers to either the Ashley or the Kingsway?
We are trying to go to London on a budget (as far as hotels are concerned)
but do not want to stay in a dilapidated hotel or a ugly section of town.
Any help you could provide on this would be appreciated. Thank you very
much.
Stephen

Steve,
Norfolk Square is a couple of blocks southeast of Paddington Station and one block north of Sussex Gardens which it parallels. The whole area, particularly Sussex Gardens consists of former townhouses converted to hotels. Many of those on Sussex Gardens seem to attract an unsavory clientele. Since these buildings were, at time, town houses, many of the rooms are indescribably small. Some years ago, I reserved a double room sight unseen. Upon arrival I discovered to my amusement and chagrin that the only way into the double bed was from the foot! (Felt pretty sure the sheets had not been changed since the bed was installed and moved off to a charming hotel in Little Venice.) If you're economizing, why not consider a Bed and Breakfast? The Great British Bed and Breakfast Guide lists a number of London B&Bs that go for approximately 23-25 pounds per person per night. That equates to approximately $85.00 per couple, reasonable for a London room. You might want to check the Guide's website for some listings. It's at www.kgp-publishing.co.uk.
Thanks for the advice, Wes. I really appreciate it. Since I originally posted my message, I checked out other replies which corroborate your opinion. I even found the website you listed. I guess we will have to keep looking.
I wouldnt stay in Bayswater.
Try calling 'Forte Hotels' (check 800 5551212 information for the number) they offer decent hotrels in decent areas . i stayed in the 'kensington close' hotel once. ask them if they have any offers. they usually do....
also try calling raddison, they run a great group of eduardian hotel swhich are very atmospheric. they also have special offers sometimes.
some cheaper hotels can often be found around the south kensigton tube station and around russel sq and the british museum. holiday inn and comfort inn run some hotels there.
good luck
be careful not to get too far from central london..... its a big city.
Richard, thanks for the info. We are still in the process of looking and will take your tips under advisement. Trying to find a nice place without spending a fortune has been difficult to say the least but we cannot wait for the trip. Thanks again.
