We've had wonderful luck in Bavaria with zimmer frei. Many homes have signs in the window or the local tourist office can direct you. We've maintained a friendship of almost 20 years with a couple whose home we stayed in outside Munich. In August, you may want to start looking fairly early in the day. Double (with breakfast) will often cost less than the equivalent of 50 USD.

Good advice from Betsy above: Go with the ZIMMER FREI signs and start early in the day to lock in a room. These places are local and depend on drive by traffic to get business. If you are in a tourist area the good ones get taken. Start early is very wise and you will be okay.

hi there,

looking for "Zimmer frei" signs is a good idea, but on the one hand You have to look a lot for them so cant enjoy the ride. On the other You just see those on the road. Better choise is to go to the tourist offices in the towns You want to stay. They know the best and the cheapest places to stay and also a lot of other things that will help You along.
have fun
Gar

Hal C, Just got back from a 3and a half week trip in Germany. Stayed most nights in a gausthouse zimmer. Got the room mostly by stopping at the Big I, information at each one of the town that we visited. When from Frieberg to Fussen and a few other places. Had great places to sleep. Mostly form 40.00 to 55.00 Euro's a night for two people. If you want any names drop me a line and I will e-mail them back to you. Have fun we did.
