cheap reasonable hotel in bellagio and milano(near cathedral a safe bet?)
hi folks
seems i asked the question in the title.a cheap but reasonable hotel in varenna/bellagio and one in milano(is it better to stay near the cathedral)...

We stayed at Hotel Milano in May and loved it. Would stay there again in a heart beat. The cost was good and the service wonderful. The view of the lake was priceless. Their web site is www.varenna.net (I could not open it today) and it is very informative. e-mail is [email protected]. We took the train from Milan to Varenna. Then took a ferry to Bellagio for the day! Enjoy your trip it is a beautiful area of Italy.

the only hotel in bellagio which is located on the lake is the albergo metropole - its double rooms with balconies overhang the lake and the scenery is spectacular. whilst the hotel is closed for the winter it reopens in mid march - in the meantime please view the website which i found to be very informative (includes a useful f.a.q. page plus virtual tour) in Milan i suggest you stay at the hotel manin if you want to be near the the cathedral but still in a reasonably priced hotel (the hotel cristallo near the station is much cheaper but 4 stops from the cathedral)

Agree with La Pergola being the best bet for a pleasant, inexpensive hotel in Bellagio and yes, it is right on the lake but not on the same part where the ferries land. It's a little quieter near La Pergola (not that Bellagio is really noisy anywhere).
However, by paying cash, I was able to get a lovely lake-view room at the Florence Hotel for not much more than I would have paid at La Pergola and the Florence is definitely a nicer hotel.

I agree that I'd stay at Florence Hotel for the same price, but I believe their rooms are no nicer (or bigger)than the one I had.
The only reason I wouldn't choose LaPergola (assuming I want to keep my prices down)is if I couldn't get one the rooms with terraces (not the hewer rooms) and if I was returning during a heat wave.

We stayed in the Hotel Gritti in Milan. We thought it was good value for the location, 5 minutes walk from the Duomo. The staff were very helpful also. However the rooms are small and the bathroom is mega small. We had no problems as this was our expectation but it might be a problem to some.

B Tilke, you wrote that you got a better deal at the Florence Hotel by paying cash. I didn't know that this would represent a savings. Can you tell me what the difference was between credit card and cash payment? Does the hotel advertise this, or did you just know to inquire? Also, why was the Florence definitely better? Thanks.

The discount for cash is 8%. I believe it's noted on their web site or perhaps they told me in an email. It's also noted when you check in.
Re Pergola, I didn't stay there, but from the pictures of the rooms I saw and from what I could tell about the hotel when I stopped in to get some information, I still believe the Florence is a much better hotel. My room certainly was nicer than any I saw pictured at Pergola.
However, one thing to keep in mind about the Florence is that it doesn't have air conditioning. I didn't need it in May 2004 and I doubt if we'll need it in late Sept./early Oct 2005, but for a mid summer stay, I would like to have it. I stayed in a hotel in June 2003 in Lugano with no AC, during the infamous heat wave, and no thanks, not an experience I'd want to repeat.

These are apartment accommodations in an excellent location in the middle of Bellagio. Very spacious, nice views, garden area, rates from 60 euros for a studio in low season to 130 euros for a 4-person apartment in high season.
