Cheap Living

Hi everyone,

I am going to Amsterdam for four nights with a travel companion before heading upwards to Norway.

We are rather short on funds, honestly, and would love to find an alternative to hostels which get pricey around the time we are going (Dec 31 we arrive!).

Does anyone have any "off-the-beaten-path" suggestions on living? We are open to most anything that isn't a park or a street corner and are simply looking for some advise.

Thanks!
-Eri

Check this out:

I haven't tried it, just heard about it.

Happy travels,

I don't know how 'cheap' you need...

Hotel Kap shows rooms for 75/91€ for Dec 31-Jan 7 at least (twin room)

Hotel Omega is avail on
http://www.gtahotels.com/
for 70/82/103€ for same dates (twin room)

How much (or how little) do you want to spend?

OK - maybe I'll sound rude here, but I honestly don't mean to be. If you cannot afford a hostel, why are you going to one fairly expensive city before heading off to another very expensive country?

I would either cut back the length of the trip so you have more money per day, or head out into the countryside where hotels/B&Bs/Hostels cost less.

There's a list of hostels here:
http://www.insquish.com/housing.htm

Also details of a campsite just outside Amsterdam - they rent cabins if you don't want to camp.

Have fun!

why don't you look into homeexchanges? (I have not done it, but I know many do)

You might also ask your question over on the Thorn Tree at Lonely Planet's website. Fodor's doesn't have much of a hostel-staying crowd, yet alone even cheaper than that! Good luck with the trip.

A few years ago DH went on a stag weekend to Amsterdam. They booked a hostel but there was a mix up and not enough beds were available, so some of them slept on the station floor. Those who stayed in the hostel said they'd rather go for the station floor next time.

I've stayed at a monastery - San Luchesio - great location near top end of Vondel Park and rooms were about the same as hostel but this was private room, clean, safe, shower in room but no TV - big buffet breakfast

really nice brothers run it and it's in an ancient monastic building

I've also stayed in B&Bs - not the fancy canalside B&Bs in center that charge as much or more than many hotels but real B&B in someone's house - paid 29 euros few years ago with breakfast for nice room in old couple's house. Was a few miles out but in a neat ordinary neighborhood of small shops, cafes, pubs and even a local coffeeshop (cannabis on the menu as opposed to koffieshops which are coffeeshops)
