Charming villages in Austria for hiking trip in mid-June 2016?

Jump to last reply

My adult family are planning to return to our much loved Austria for 8 nights in mid June of 2016 and we're looking for some new destinations. We love to hike (gentle to moderate) but also enjoy action during the evenings (active local restaurants, local music, etc.). Our focus will be on the Alps and our arrival airport will be Munich. We'll have rental cars.

Some of our favorite destinations in the past have been Alpbach, the Salzkammergut area (including St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, and Hallstatt), and Mittenwald, Germany. We've also spent time in Salzburg.

Any recommendations for new destinations? Also, I'm sensitive to timing around hiking. I know June 9 to June 18th could be early for some of the destinations with higher elevations. Also, concerned that cable cars might not be open.

Here are some of the destinations we're thinking of - thinking of 3 in total (2 to 3 nights at each place) - we're really looking for the "wow/gemutlich" factor in terms of scenic beauty and architecture. I also don't like places in the summer where it's obvious that it's all about winter skiing.

Tannheimer Tal - heard it's beautiful. Too quiet?
Zillertal area? Not sure where to stay. Mayrhofen didn't seem too charming to me when I was there once. Wondering about Zell im Zillertal. Maybe the villages further up (i.e., Finkenberg and others might be too quiet?)
Zell am See area - looks beautiful and have never been. Too touristy? or is June early enough before the hordes? Another village near by?
Achensee area - is this charming?

If anyone has a place they can recommend with a great beer hall/beer garden and/or local music or a wonderful local festival during the mid June time frame, we would search it out.

Any input would be appreciated.
