I've been following the discussion and I understand there's no great way directly from chania to santorini. I do have a couple questions if you guys can help... I am going from Athens to chania then to santorini in late august.
- if I have a specific travel date in early September should I book a ticket now or wait until I arrive in Greece? I assume the schedules are subject to minor changes, but I would hate for the boat I need to be sold out...
- what is the likelihood of a scheduled ferry departing from chania (or closer than heraklion) by my travel dates???
Thanks for your help.

The only ferry to Santorini from Crete departs from Heraklion. There's no way around that. Hellenic Seaways and Sea Jets are the two highspeed ferry companies that offer the most consistent service. Between the two of them there is at least one ferry each day. Most days there are two. A third company, Aegeon Pelagos Sea Lines, offers a slower car ferry and I think it's once a week.
Go to http://www.gtp.gr and see what's available on your travel date. Booking in advance beyond a couple of days is probably not necessary in September since it's not so busy then and demand will be low to medium, so you can wait until you reach Chania to buy your ticket. If you prefer to book further in advance do so through the ferry company website and opt to pick up your ticket from their representaive at the port in Heraklion.
There is an early morning bus from Chania to Heraklion that will take you within easy walking distance to the ferry dock.
