Chania to Herakloin

.Hi,

We will be staying at Nikolas Rooms in Chania. We have a ferry to catch from herakloin port at 9AM on the 5th June. So keeping in mind that we need to be there 45 min prior, we will have to reach the port by latest 8:15 AM. What is the best way to get to the herakloin port from Chania? The taxi's seem too expensive and we are budget travelers. Are there buses that leave chania by 4:30 AM?

Also, can you tell us what is the best way to get to the port from the herakloin bus station?

Thanks

If you are meaning that you have to get to Heraklion in the east of Crete for 8am [you want to leave yourselves a bit of extra time, surely] leaving the same day from Chania, then I don't think that it can be done without a taxi, and even then, I wouldn't chance it.

Here's the bus timetable:

Much safer to travel to Heraklion the day before, stay there overnight, and get to the port nice and early in the morning.

The first bus to Heraklion leaves Chania according to the timetable at 05:15, the duration of the trip is approximately 2,5 hours, you should arrive at Heraklion around 08:00 am....

There is no other alternative to the bus other than a taxi, unless you would like to spend the last night in Heraklion.

The Bus station is located next to the port, it will take 5 minutes to cross the street and get there.

I phoned KTEL Chania and they said there won't be a bus leaving earlier, but as it leaves very early and there will be no traffic, there should be no delay it might even arrive earlier than 08:00 hrs.

annhig - Thank you.

@clausar - Thank you SO much. I can't express how helpful you've been with all your responses! Hellenic has mentioned in the ticket that we should get to the port 30 mins in advance. If we are there by 8:30, we're good! Since it's just crossing the road from the station, then I think we will just take the 5:15 bus. Can you please tell me what is the name of the port where we will be catching the herakloin ferry?

You can help yourselves on the timing issue by purchasing your ferry ticket in Chania the day you arrive there. That way you are not wasting any time when you arrive in Heraklion.

If you already have your ticket then there is really no need to worry about getting to the ship 30 minutes in advance they don't cut off boarding until just before the ferry departs.

The Heraklion bus station doesn't have terminals. Just get off the bus grab your bags and walk around the terminal until you see the water. Look to your right. The ferry terminal is obvious. Walk along the sidewalk heading right towards the terminal. It really is only less than a 10 minute walk hauling your roller suitcase. If you are a heavy luggage traveler then you may want to take a taxi.

Less luggage and light luggage is always preferable in Greece as you will discover when you haul your bags to the Chania bus station at 4:45 am.

The bus ride ends at the bus station of Heraklion, which will be the last stop anyway.

There aren't terminals, all you have to do is cross the street in front of the bus station, the port is right there, you will have to walk to the piers where the ships are docked

The port has no terminals either... the ship/ships will be clearly visible , just walk to there and if you have already purchased the tickets, walk straight to your ship.

Have a look at Google Earth, the port is easy to find, you will see where the ships dock, and the bus station is clearly visible as well, with all the parked buses.

Google Streetview works for Heraklion as well
