Chania and then???

My boyfriend and I are going to Greece for our first time this June and our first island on the itinerary is Crete. We are both active and although we enjoy the beach, we also want to do some SCUBA, snorkeling, hiking and lounging while we're there. Any recommendations? Favorite beaches? I thought Chania might be a nice central place in Western Crete to start to explore, rent mo-peds to visit the beaches and hike the Samaria Gorge one day.
It sounds like Western Crete has more to offer for us as well as far as activities and nightlife goes. Some SCUBA, beaches nearby, hiking, snorkelling...So Chania is where we will spend our first 3 nights and I'm researching where to spend our last 2 nights...I heard Loutro was beautiful or even Rhethymo?
