Changing train tickets ??

While in Venice the week before last, I purchased (in advance) a number of train tickets for different legs of our travels through Italy. So I have the train number, the carriage and seat allocations already.

Now at Sorrento, leaving via Naples, for Rome on New Years Day ... the trouble is, that I have just found out that there is adrastically reduced train service from Sorrento to Naples on that day because of the holiday. There is one train about 8.10am and the next (and last on the day) is about 12.37pm arriving in Naples at 1.50pm ... my prepaid train ticket is for the 1.50 pm Naples to Rome - obviously I won't have time to get the connection. (And my preference is not to get up so early as to catch the 8.10am - but will do so if I really have to.)

My question on The Forum is this ... (apart from checking at the train station tomorrow) ...
Can I change my pre-purchased ticket on the 1.50pm to Rome, to a later train when I get to Naples? (Because I will miss this train.)
Is there a charge involved for doing this?

Regards,

Marty R.

Hi MR,

You can change your ticket without a fee if it is a regular, no discount, ticket.

If you have a discount fare, you will pay a fee to change it.

Good luck.

PS, if it is a regular ticket, it is good on any train.

If you booked a mini fare, you have to change the ticket the day before. The rules say at the issuing agency, but I would try a travel agency in Sorrento that has the Trenitalia logo.

Mini fare
Booking/ticket change

Booking/ticket change is possible only once from the day the ticket/booking is issued and up to midnight of the day before departure, solely at ticket desks at train stations or at the travel agency where the ticket was issued. You are only allowed to change the departure date or time for the same category of train or service, subject to a change fee (equal to the difference to the corresponding full base price) and only for a journey to take place after the one booked. The new ticket will have the same characteristics as the Mini ticket. Tickets bought on this site cannot be changed online. For ticketless tickets, go directly to the station ticket desk or the issuing agency; as for tickets that need to be picked up at the self-service machine, you need to pick up the printed ticket and then go to the ticket desk.

You could check ferry and bus service to Naples.

What ira and kybourbon said. And just a general observation, Marty, but next time you plan a trip you might want to do some research ahead of time to save yourself a lot of headache and money. You already completely wasted 145 euros because you didn't know about ATM machines, and now this. Don't know about you, but in this economy throwing money down the drain doesn't make much sense to me.

Marty, you should recheck those New Year's Day details first.

You'll find my own interpretation of the CV's notice (which as a "general observation" I'll point out they only issued on the 22nd or 23rd) here...

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTop....html#37556591

I've not asked them directly - and wouldn't rely on the website to cope accurately on any of the affected days - but would have expected there to have been a series of trains between 08:11 and 12:39.... perhaps at less regular intervals than normal.... rather than just one at each of those two times!

They do say 'first' and 'last' so I'm pretty sure you'll find there are others inbetween...

While it's now a moot point for Marty, the original posting does not give sufficient information to give a specific response.

For the benefit of other readers, here is a summary of the Trenitalia rules for changing pre-booked tickets for any of the fast trains:

1. "MINI" fare: Absolutely no changes are allowed AFTER 23:59 (Italy time) of the day PRIOR to scheduled day of departure. The ONE allowed change must be to a LATER-departing train of the same category, with the payment of the difference in fare between the "MINI" fare actually paid and the "base" fare;

2. Standard "base" fare: ONE change is allowed up to ONE HOUR AFTER scheduled departure of the train. Trenitalia does not charge for the service, provided the same category of train is used;

3. "Flessibile" fare: UNLIMITED number of changes are allowed up to the departure time of the train. Afterwards, ONE change is allowed up to 24 hours AFTER scheduled departure of the train. Trenitalia does not charge for the service, provided the same category of train is used;

4. ELECTRONIC ticket for regionale trains: Can be used on ANY regionale train for the city pair indicated on the electronic receipt, up to FOUR HOURS after scheduled departure of the selected regionale train;

5. PAPER ticket for regionale trains: can be used on ANY regionale train for the city pair indicated on the paper ticket, up to TWO MONTHS after the ISSUE date of the paper ticket, AS LONG AS NOT "validated" (punched) in the little yellow machine at the rail station (after which time the ticket is (usually) valid for 6 hours if the trip is UP TO 200 kilometers, or 24 hours if the trip is more than 200 kilometers). You MUST "validate" a paper ticket for a regionale train.

More detailed rules can be found on the Trenitalia website, but unfortunately, not always in English (and sometimes the rules of the Italian and English-language versions don't entirely match).

There are different rules for ticket exchanges and ticket refunds.

I need to restate my fourth point above, which might be misinterpreted as currently worded:

4. ELECTRONIC ticket for regionale trains: Can be used on ANY regionale train for the city pair indicated on the electronic receipt, up to FOUR HOURS after scheduled departure of the BOOKED regionale train (the TRAIN is booked/selected, but regionale train SEATS are always unreserved);

(By contrast, with a PAPER ticket for a regionale train, no specific train is shown on the ticket itself (only the city pairs, class of service, distance of trip in kilometers, and fare paid), and you're free to select your departure date and time for up to two months after issuance issuance, provided that you only board a regionale train for the route concerned).
