Changing planes in Frankfurt
I will be arriving in Frankfurt from the US on a United flight (codeshare with Lufthansa) and then flying from FRA to Florence on Lufthansa city flights. After we go through immigration and presumably pick up our bags, will we need to go through security again or will we still be behind security?

Your bags will be checked straight through to Florence and yes you will need to go through security again.
Wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking in Frankfurt airport.
I flew through there on my way to and from Florence in March and we were bussed out to our small plane to Florence, we drove past every other plane, the spare buses, the recycling and garbage bins, the snow removing equipment until finally we reached our plane at the far reaches of the airport, it was really quite funny.
I normally transit through Frankfurt and have to say that is the first time that has happened.
The airport in Florence is very small, taxi to city centre is 20 euro.

So, if I carry on a 20 inch roller on United, will I be able to get it on the flight to Florence, or will It have to check it outside security, or at the gate?
Recently when I was flying from Austria to the states, I had to check a standard size roller because they had an 8 kilo weight limit. That led to a complete reorganization of bags while at the check in line because I had planned to carry on the roller and a large tote, but could only take the tote. BTW, both the flights to and from Austria were on Austrian Air, and carrying the roller on board was no problem going to Europe,

It really depends on the size and weight of the bag and which aircraft they are using. Last time I had a very slim line small wheeled carry on, made by Knomo, about 16.5 inches and it was fine.
The time before I had one about 20 inches and they checked it as I was boarding the plane.
I would try to bring a fairly small carry on if you don't want it to be checked.

I took my bag on and it was 22 inch. The worse part was we loaded front and back and people ran out of room. The flight attendant was yelling for people to move it and sit in German. It was sort of a cluster. We did the bus also out to the plane. I just flew Frankfurt to Dublin and that was very smooth. We even got half a sandwich and free beer. Florence airport, ignore the cab drivers inside trying to hustle you. Go to the cab area outside.
