Has anyone taken this airport shuttle recently? It sounds like an economical way to get to the center of town without dealing with the metro. I understand that it waits to be full before leaving - if you've taken it, did you have to wait long? Can you buy tickets from the driver?

I think you mean Cedaz and as far as I am aware stopped several years ago,I do remember using it about 15 years ago but have not used it since.They did have a route that went from the airport to Namesti Republicky (outside the Hilton hotel) but this stopped last year.
I am a regular visitor to Prague (just back from 2 weeks there my second visit this year) and there has been many changes to the metro/bus/tram services over the last few years.let me know where you are staying and I can see if I can help you with getting to your hotel by public transport

Thanks unclegus. We're staying at the K&K Hotel Central (Hybernska 1001) so the Namesti Republicky looked like a good place to be dropped off.
I hear there is an airport express bus that drops off at Main Train Station but that looks like a longer walk.
Any suggestions?

take the 119 bus from the airport to Nadrazi Velselavin (the last stop) then take the no 26 tram from there to Masarykovo nádraží which is the stop after Namesti Republicky. you are then about 50 yards or so from the hotel. you will need a 32kc ticket which can be bought at the stand at the airport or from one of the many machines there, Stamp it once in the yellow machine on the bus and you have 90 minutes of transportation with that ticket on any bus tram or metro, no need to restamp it when you change modes of transport.should take you 40-50 minutes from the airport to your hotel.
great area to stay in, you will be able to walk to all the main sights from there apart from the castle but easy to get there by tram (22 or 23)

that link does say there is no escalators at Veleslavin, though this is true it is only for a short set of steps (about 25) to the first level of the metro and there are escalators from there, what it does no mention is the lift from the Bus station level to all levels of the metro including the actual train level, you just have to look for it, at bus level it is across a small side road from the buses at metro level to the right of the main escalators.
The Veleslavin metro is only 2 years old and in true Kafkaesque fashion the powers that be decided there was no need for an escalator from the upper metro level to the bus stops,when the airport authorities found this out they actually introduced the porters who are only there part of the time,early morning and late evening you are on your own. I only found the lift by accident and that was only a few weeks ago.
there is talk of installing escalators at Veleslavin some time soon which could be many years away.

THanks unclegus for all the transportation info. You really know the system. As weird as it may sound, I feel more comfortable just taking one form of transportation and then walking. Trying to figure out the tram and where to get off will stress me out. I'm thinking I'll just take the Airport Express and then walk the 10 minutes to the hotel.

AE will work out Ok for you I have used it a few time but usually from the train station to the Airport, but really the transport system is so easy to use and at Veleslavin it is very easy to work out what to do when changing from buses to trams or metro.
last time I used the AE bus it was 60kc and you pay the driver
yes I am pretty used to the system, just back from 2 weeks in the city and have been making round 3 trips a year to Prague for the last 10 years or so and at least one trip for the last 25 years.

this shows the walking route from the train station. the first part in the stationlos like you have to cross the road Wilsonova, but you don't as the train station is underneath this road and you come out onto the small park area, if you take the route to the left on that map you will walk past the Jubilee Synagogue and there is less traffic on that route. good luck but it is an easy enough walk.

I should have said the AE bus actually stops on Wilsonova at the old entrance to the train station, you have to go into the train station and down a couple of levels to the exit onto the park area, all very obvious. Don't be tempted to cross Wilsonova , this is probably the busiest road in the city .I have seen folk trying to wheel suitcases across this road.............. not recommended.

Now point of interest the Old entrance to the train station has been renovated / restored and re-opened about 18 months ago and is quite stunning , so spend a minute or two having a little look around the area .

Thanks for the tip about exiting from AE bus. I was looking at a map and Wilsonova looked like a very busy street. I will follow your instructions.
