CDW / insurance
Sorry all, one more redundant question about car rentals and CDWs in Ireland.
I was just getting rates from autoeurope and with the inclusive rates, it says that the optional CDW insurance is included.
I am, however, confused. There are so many posts now talking about other insurance, super CDW, extended insurance, insurance for extra drivers, insurance for lost keys, insurance for any wounded sheep, and apparently also my first born. Although, admittedly, that last one I won't be accepting as I don't plan on children in my future.
HELP!!! Is the included CDW insurance enough? And what about these MC world cards. Ugh.

The major change, since that was run, is that NOW, a Gold or Platinum MasterCard is NOT godd for CDW Waiver -- it MUST be a World Card. Diner;s Club and SOME Canadian Visa Cards are also accepted still, too, I believe.

Hi J,
CDW has a deductible. The amount depends on the car. It's about 1200E for a compact.
Super CDW has a lower deductible - sometimes zero. Costs about 150E.

Hi All,
So let me see if I have this right. I have studied more rental car companies, and it appears that if I accept the CDW and they give me a quote with the CDW included, I do NOT have to worry about this MC world card or a $2000 hold on my card. Is that correct???
I never imagined planning the trip of my life (so far) would be stressful of all things! Sheesh!

Irish Car Hire is THE single biggest detriment to Irish Tourism ...
Once youget past THAT, the rest is EASY!
If you don't get the CDW, you are responsible for ALL damage to the car.
If you buy the CDW, you are responsible for the "EXCESS" damage to the car. Generally, (depending on company, or car type)that is between 500 and 1200 Euros.
If you buy the SUPER CDW (extra) you are responsible for the DEDUCTIBLE - usually 100 Euro.
If you use a Diner's Club, certain Canadian Visa card, or a USA issued WORLD MASTERCARD, you can opt to decline ALL the extra insurance. In the case of the World MasterCard, MasterRental will reimburse you for MOST of any damage claim -- up to the limits of coverage. (I have been TOLD, that they do NOT re-imburse the VAT tax?)
Tires (and, presumably, hubcaps), windshields, undercarraige damage and mirrors are usually NOT covered by CDW, SUPER CDW, NOR, by MasterRental ...
Whether or not theRental Company puts a HOLD (or, for how MUCH)is at the discretion of the Rental Company. For example, if you purchace the CDW, but NOT the Super CDW, the Rental company MAY decide to put a HOLD on your card for the amount of the EXCESS. Even if you bought ALL the available insurance, they STILL might opt to place a HOLD of as much as 500 Euro, to cover "incidentals"....

MOST companies WON'T do the HOLD, but no one but THEM can say, FOR SURE....

I have every intention on accepting the CDW, so it sounds like I don't have to worry about the MC world crap. Thats a HUGE relief!!!
I think I finally understand. Phew!
That big sigh you hear is the extra frustration leaving my body.
The "excitement" part is just around the corner.

I also am travelling in May to Ireland and have been attemtping to find a credit card with CDW coverage. I cannot get a straight answer from anyone at MasterCard nor Citibank. Citibank has send me two cards already which come to find out are not accepted for CDW in Ireland.
Just got off the phone with Diners Club - their card for $95/year fee DOES cover the CDW in Ireland.
Hertz had given me quote of $101.50 Euros for CDW and $70 for Super CDW - that is weekly! We are going to two weeks.
So I think I am just going to get the Diners Club - no deductible.
This is a total scam if you ask me.

Yes, I plan on using Hertz - I confirmed with them yesterday (International Desk) that they do accept the waiving of CDW if you put on a credit card that carries it.
Yesterday I decided to call the 1-800-MC-ASSIST (Mastercard 800 number) and review again with them the Mastercard option. The person of the phone this time said just to go to www.mastercard.com and under Get Cards he would tell me exactly which ones listed ARE covered in Ireland.
He said alot of folks get the CitiBank PremierPass card - NO annual fee involved and it is covered in Ireland.
So I decided to apply for this card - and keep the Diners option open until this card arrives and I can confirm everything.
