OK, for anyone who has rented a car in Ireland, you probably know that most credit cards (except Diners Club and World Mastercards starting in 5466) don't cover CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) insurance in Ireland. The insurance is expensive at the rental car counter - can add $300 or more to a two-week rental. So, I thought of an alternative, and I want to know if anyone has done this before, and had any problems>
I get trip insurance for delays, cancellations, lost luggage, medical, medical evacuation, etc. It usually costs about $450 for the three of us traveling to Ireland for 2 weeks. It seems that for an extra $50, I can get insurance that also covers CDW. This seems to be a real bargain to me. Does it sound feasible? Reliable? I know there are folks here who travel to Ireland frequently... what do you think?
Thanks!

Trip Ideas
Will a car hire company in Ireland accept a CDW cover as an add-on to a trip insurance? Since it's damage to their rental fleet you are covering, they will have a serious concern about the viability of your policy, as the upper limit of claim is the car's market value (and cars aren't cheap in Ireland because of high taxes). A compact like Ford Fiesta retails at over 15,000 euro ($22,500).
What would be the sequence of payment if you use a trip insurance? Is it going to be like this?
1. The rental company charges your CC
2. You send a claim.
3. You do paper work go between the rental company and the insurance company for however long it takes.
4. You pay interests on you CC charge in meanwhile?
Alec: the limits on the policies I was looking at were either $25K or $50K. I would get the $50K one to be safe. And yes, I'd check with the rental company to make sure they'll accept it!
Greg: Great questions - I would have to ask the insurance those questions...
Here's another option. Open an account with www.xe.com/fx. The normal process is to have money taken from your checking account by electronic transfer and to have a bank draft in the currency of your choice sent directly by US mail to the recipient of your choice. If you don't want the apartment owner to get the money in advance, then have the draft made payable to the owner but mailed to your home. Take the draft with you and hand it over in person.
The exchange rate is only slightly above the international rate on the day the transaction is initiated. There are no fees. For security reasons it takes a little time and effort to set up an account, but everything goes swiftly and smoothly after that.
I use my account to pay deposits at B&Bs that don't accept credit cards and to sent gift money to relatives in the UK.
Oops! Ignore my post above. It was meant for another thread.
GreenDragon-
What company are you using for your trip insurance?
I am very interested in seeing if this will work in Ireland.
I used insuremytrip.com to find comparable plans, and came up with this one that meets all our needs:
Travel Insured
Worldwide Trip Protector Gold
$521.00
I used insuremytrip.com, and found a package that meets all our needs here:
Travel Insured
Worldwide Trip Protector Gold
$521.00
Whoops! Sorry for the double...
It sounds like a good deal to me as I didn't know travel policies covered car deductibles. I'd just make sure the company itself will pay in Ireland and the rental firm, of course. But it sounds like a reasonable idea, especially if you wanted trip insurance, anyway. Your costs are really high for your trip insurance, I never pay that much (about $100 for a two week trip), but maybe that's because I don't put hardly any amount down as the basic amount to cover since I don't prepay very much. I'm not young, either.
If it only costs you $50 more (but it may be more compared to other insurance plans), I think it's good. Of course you will likely have to pay the amount yourself and then try to get reimbursed by that company.
GreenDragon. Speak with a representative from Insure My Trip before you purchase the policy.
Three of four years ago, I considered getting a policy that covered CDW. But when I spoke to the representative, she explained to me that the coverage only applies if you have booked your trip through someone else. That is if let us say AAA booked the plane tickets and car for you.
Now. That having been said. Things could have changed since then. As I know that at the time I did not pay the extra for the car insurance to be added to my policy as we had made all of the arrangements for the trip ourselves and the coverage would not apply.
It may have been the policy I was looking at then as I do not remember which company I picked. I am pretty sure I did not misunderstand her.
So to be safe, just double check with an agent from insure my trip.
Good Luck
Good point Sher, I will definitely check on that! Christina, that cost is for all three of us - it's only a third of that for me alone.
Check http://www.insuremycarhire.com. I haven't used them myself, but I've read good reports.
It looks that is only for the excess CDW, the 'super-CDW' that brings your deductible down to zero, rather than the 'main-CDW' that's required.
Here's another site to check: www.dailyexcess.com.
