CDG to Apartment in the 2e in Paris

I know that this question has been asked many times but since I am the one planning a trip for myself and two girlfriends I need re-assurance. We will be arriving at CDG from the USA at 9:45 a.m. We will be staying at an apartment at 9 rue Mandar in the 2e. I had originally thought that we could take the RER but now am having second thoughts after reading some of the other Fodor messages. Since there will be three of us would it be better to take a taxi. I know that the cost would be more but would it be worth it for the ease of travel. I have some experience traveling in Europe but haven't been to Paris for a very long time. Thanks.

Well, that would be my thinking, also, but I am not stingy when it comes to transportation upon arrival after an overnight flight and with baggage. It's just not something I want to scrimp on, it's not worth it to me, but I don't spend that much on other things.

In your case, that address is not even within a block or two of a metro stop. So you'd be walking a ways if that is what your alternative is... about 3 blocks from Etienne Marcel metro stop, or maybe Sentier, also. It isn't close enough to the RER stop (Chatelet-Les Halles) that I would walk it, but some people might, I suppose. It's probably around 500 meters. So if you were really thinking of taking the metro one stop, you'd have to walk from Chatelet-Les Halles to the Les Halles metro stop attached, then to one stop to Etienne Marcel, I guess. What exactly were you planning to do if you took the RER? It isn't a very good location for that.

Lindamarie...

I had a similar question for my upcoming trip to Paris (I leave Thursday...woo-hoo!)

I debated taking a taxi vs. a private car. Originally I planned to take a taxi (there are 2 of us traveling), but last week, after reading recommendations for a private car I booked with this company http://www.shuttle-inter.com/ based on a recommendation from another Fodorite.

For 2 of us the private car is 55 Euro (as I understand it that is about what a taxi would cost). I believe the price goes up for 3 people. But the driver will meet us (holding a sign with my name) at the airport. I figure the convenience is worth the 55 Euro. Especially after an overnight flight!

I think I'd be willing to pay extra to make sure no one was holding a sign for me at the airport!

Really, I can't imagine needing that - you just walk through the door and the taxis are right there. It's hardly a matter of "convenience," as you have to walk through the door anyway.

It is 3 for 55 euros, per their website. This is the service that I use all the time, and since I have passed the info on to others I have heard how much they have appreciated it.

If you e-mail they they will quickly get back to you...

Have a good trip...

I think Gracejoan is a one note for her car service.
Just walk out the door, get in the taxi queue and take the cab and you will be on your way. You can take the RER or whatever when you leave, but start your trip on an easy, less stressful note and arrive to the door. It will be about 50E INCLUDING tip (which the car service does not). Make a map on maporama, with the address, and sit back.
Do not take a ride from anyone who approaches you inside the terminial or at the door, no matter what they offer. Take a Taxi Parisien only.
We have done this when we have ben just a couple or for 4--it is a no brainer.

Thanks, I appreciate the information shared. Christina, I really appreciate the specific details of your message. It does sound like the taxi or shuttle is the best for us.

Gracie, we will be arriving by train from Brussels and our hotel is Marriott Rive Gauche. Two of us with suitcases, cameras, etc. I thought a taxi from the train station would be the best choice, but am I missing something?

Yes, I am a "one note", as you put it for the card service! It is the most simple way to do it..I am tired when I arrive, I exit the door and have someone with my name on a sign just waiting to take care of me! It might evenbe cheaper than a taxi, if traffic is bad. Many are grateful to have heard about them.

To each his own..really makes no difference to me..only offering choices for fellow travelers..

Enjoy.....

This is a trade-off issue involving three individuals having possibly different values.

Some want ease and comfort within some cost limit.

Some do more analysis to reach fixed trade-off or flexible criteria such as "if I am really tired and if it is raining then the taxi will be worth taking."

While others make unconditional value decisions based on cost alone (I had miserable experiences having to travel with this type of companions.)

Since the trip to your hotel is the beginning of your trip, it is worth making sure all three are in the decision making process so that the trip starts on a good note. I have been surprised by unexpected views on what were worth paying for from those I thought I knew well.

I think a lot of your decision will relate to some specifics only you can answer. The RER seems as though it was pooh-pooed early here. 9 rue Mandar is located between rue Montorgueil and rue Montmartre, with the Les Halles exit on rue Montmartre. From there, its one and one-half blocks to Mandar. BTW, and very important for those who detest walking, rue Mandar and the surrounding streets are often pedestrian only, so your cab or your shuttle may, depending upon the day and time of arrival, only be able to get within a one block distance, so you'll be walking with your baggage anyway!

The questions you need to answer for yourself are 1. The amount of luggage each of you will have; 2. Each of your comfortability/stamina with walking with that luggage, and 3. What your respective body clocks will do with the time differential.
The cost will be under 30 euro for the RER, 55-60 for a shuttle, and the taxi, with luggage is often quoted all over the place here, often not less than 45 euro.

Another thought you might want to consider is whether or not you will be using the RER/Metro system while there. The cost of buying your tickets or the pass you chose may also include the trip from the airport to Les Halles.

From a pure convenience standpoint, the taxi is your best option. No thinking necessary, except that you need to make sure you get the parisien taxi only, and you may have to lug your bags anyway.

Good luck and enjoy!
