Catal-huyuk and Hattusa Worth a detour?

I am interested in Catal Huyuk and Hattusa, but to see both would involve a detour.

There seems plenty to see at hattusa , but what about Catal Huyuk?

You may be confusing Catal Hoyuk with Alaca Hoyuk.

Catalhoyuk is a neolithic site and one of the oldest settlements in Anatolia. It is near Konya.

Alacahoyuk is something like 40-50 kilometers from Bogazkale and Hattusas. It is only 2000BC 0r so and hence about 4000 years more modern than Catalhoyuk (no sky scrapers though)

We loved Alacahoyuk and considered it well worth the extra hour or so from Hattusas. (do not forget Yazili Kaya near Hattusas, which is mysterious and fun)

You can read about HIttites and walk around Hattusas which is stark and grand. But Alacahoyuk is a true find partially excavated and with a bigger sense of being a part of nature and history without reading any more than the signs on site and a possible pamphlet.

From Ankara, Hattuşa is definitely worth a side trip. But I would say that a day trip from Ankara to Çatalhöyük is not worth the time.

Maybe try to visit Aşıklı Höyük - http://www.asiklihoyuk.org/AHeng.html - when you're in Cappadocia, it's similar to Çatalhöyük, but in a nicer setting next to the Melendiz River with a view of Hasan Dağı in the distance.

I agree with OC, Alacahöyük is a nice site, well worth visiting as part of a Hattuşa trip.

I see it only takes 1hr 15mins on that high speed train to Konya, so eminently feasible, a day trip to Çatalhöyük. If you've got time, hop off at Polatlı on the way back and take a taxi out to Gordion and the Midas Tumulus.

I loved Alacahoyuk. Really interesting site, and easy to get an idea of what the settlement looked like.

Hattusa is really big. Get a guide so you know what you're looking at.

The museum in Ankara is wonderful.

Mowmow,

That is great to hear. I think all 3 will be on the itinerary.

If you are into ancient history, Hitties are being one of the oldest civilisations spread in central Anatolia and beyond. As Othercelebi also suggest it is well worth it. You will enjoy and astonished.
Enjoy your trip,
Murat
