Hi,
Some castles you might find of interest...North of Dublin:
Ardgillan Castle - Skerries Co Dublin Irelandhttp://ardgillanskerries.com/

Dublin Castle (in Dublin City) is also an option.

The tour of the castle gives a very good overview of the history of Ireland linked to the history of the building - the area underneath has the walls of an old Viking settlement, then the castle itself has the state apartments - the history of British occupation of the castle - to the foundation of the present state and the more recent historic events associated with the castle.
The Chester Beatty library behind the castle has an interesting eastern collection and a good cafe for lunch.
All the castles mentioned in previous reply are worth visiting, and are easily to reach from Dublin.
