I have most of my itinerary planned for my two week trip to Scotland. While I know there is plenty to do in Edinburgh, I may have some "extra" time for day trips... I am most interested in your suggestions of castles that I can visit via public transportation (I don't mind about a 2 hour journey each way; if a short taxi ride or short walk is involved, please let me know). Thank you....

I'd recommend Linlithgow palace in, Linlithgow, West Lothian. Frequent buses to and from Edinburgh. The palace is in the middle of the town.
There are several - Stirling being the biggie. A quick train trip from Edinburgh.
Other easy ones are Linlithgow Palace - very short train ride.
Dirleton/Tantallon - train to North Berwick and then local buses/cabs or walking - each is about 2 miles from N Berwick.
Dunnottar - train to Stoneheven and then walk or bus to Dunnottar. About 1.5 miles from Stonehaven
St Andrews - train to Leuchars/bus to St Andrews
None of these places will be a 2 hour journey - most are less than an hour.
Do palaces count? I know there is a technical difference between a castle and a palace, but still, they're great - Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Falkland Palace in Falkland, Scone Palace just outside Perth. Also the afore-mentioned Linlithgow, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.
There are two other small castles in Edinburgh, Lauriston and Craigmillar. I haven't been to either - yet - but they look nice from photos and can be reached by local bus. Also Floors Castle in Kelso looks gorgeous, I believe also reachable via bus.
