I arranged for our hotel to pick us up at FCO in Roma and take us to Castel Gandolfo for a reasonable fee, after a long flight and changing time zones I thought that would be the least painful way to get to Castel Grandolfo.
I am going to Castel Grandolfo soon and was not able to find much detailed information on the web or in travel books, seems like it is not a very popular tourist destination, but rather a small authentic Italian town, gets crowded when the Pope is there and in summer by Lake Albano. From what I can tell walking from town to town is not suggested due to traffic on the roads, however I will be about to share more info when I return in a few weeks.
