Cash for Accommodations

I've found when making reservations at the B & B's that most want cash instead of a credit cards. I wouldn't think that anyone would carry that much cash with them. I'm wondering if anyone has had issues with getting cash in smaller towns or any issues using their ATM cards (US)?

I am having the same worry and, with three of us travelling, it is almost €100 per day, it is a concern.

Chances are that every day you will be in a town with an ATM machine.

Most towns have ATM's there are remote areas which don't our nearest one is 12 miles away but then I doubt the 1% of tourists that actually visit around here wouldn't have put enough in their wallets for the nights accommodation and entertainment before they left the last town.

I usually have at least £100/€130 cash on me at any time when traveling in the UK/Ireland. Whenever I get below maybe £50/€60 . . . I hit a cash machine.

Don't you carry cash at home?

Europe is basically a cash society. Violent crime is not the problem it is in America's major cities. Pickpocketing is the problem. I always carry plenty of cash under my shirt, with my passport.

Don't know which part of Europe is meant to be a cash society. Most people here in the Dordogne have cheque books and debit cards.

We don't even have cheque books Carlux. Haven't had cheques since before the euro.

I can't see that carrying €100+ around need be a worry, especially with more than one of you to carry it. When I take cash out (which isn't very often it's true) I always take out at least €100.

Plus this is rural Ireland we're talking about, not Paris or Amsterdam or Barcelona.

North of France, checks are not accepted. I once stayed in a B&B in Ghent and offered to pay with a check. The host relented after she thought it over because she was going to visit her parents in France and could have them cash the check.

This is the kind of question that shows personal as well as cultural differences. The same amount of cash can be characterized as too much to one while not much to others. What is the basis of comparison? I have seen Japanese shoppers in Tokyo whipping out over $500 in yens the way the Americans would pull out a $5 bill to buy a pastry and coffee. I have seen a Chinese tourist pulling out €600 in cash at a store in München. He probably had at least €2000 more cash in his wallet. Meanwhile, at home in the U.S., most people at a cafeteria at work use credit cards even for items costing $4 to $10.

Thanks for your responses!! I don't usually carry much cash at home - I try to keep $20 in my wallet - maybe $40 or so if we are going out and I may have to buy drinks at the bar. Otherwise I use my card for everything - much easier!
I guess I've picked the wrong B & B's! I don't think any of them are that cheap!

Not wise to flash a lot of cash in some places common senses world wide.. Having a couple of hundred to hand between a couple or three is enough day to day wedge.

Whilst the vast majority of B&B's are around €30-€40 per person per night some that lurk at the top of TA ratings charge what they can get away with rather than what they offer.. Some locations also work on the principal of milking the tourist cash cow mainly US$ or maybe that's just my natural cynicism?

Tony - after looking at my reservations again most are not much more than that - and the one that you suggested - Dromcloc is probably the cheapest at 32 euros. I guess because I'm at each place for 2 nights it seems like more!

Well I don't like running to the ATM all the same - so we each take out about $300 at a time. And we're staying at places where we pay with CC - and most dinners are CC.

Taking out $100 at a time can get very expensive.

I have no fee withdrawals.. but even so..I would never take out only 100 euros at once.. I draw my limit each time.. and put it in hotel safe or wear in money belt when in transit.

I have not been to Ireland but assume its like the rest of Europe.. the locals need ATMS too.. and there is likely to be one most towns except villages..
