Cash and Czech Crowns
Hi,
We are spending the bank holiday weekend 25 to 28 August in Prague - we are so used to always taking euro out at the ATM (and if we have some left over we just keep it for our next time we go to Europe which is reasonably regularly) - but in the Czech Republic they use Czech crowns: so my question is: how much should we withdraw - we use credit card a lot and have paid for our hotel - will we need a lot of cash and how much should we withdraw as we shall not have the facility of if any is left we can use it the next time?

No one here knows how much you might spend in a long weekend in Prague. Take out as much as you need. My ATM card doesn't charge per use (and most ATMs in Europe don't charge a fee - at least, I've never been charged one), so I take out 20 Euros (or the equivalent in that country's currency) here or there as needed - and use my credit card most of the time. You'll be able to use your credit card in most places in Prague.

I don't understand your question. Take out whatever you need based on your spending habits and costs there. It's simply a matter of math to translate CZK into euro or whatever currency you can think in. I can't imagine you would need very much for just a couple days if you use credit cards for restaurants or purchases, etc., but I don't know your spending habits. Why would you need a lot of cash?
What do you think you are going to use cash for? I can't imagine except for maybe a small snack or something, and then perhaps some transportation tickets. I suppose some museum or attraction might not take credit cards, but I don't recall that being a problem. If you buy a lot of "stuff" in shops, you'd have to budget for that, although any major shop will take credit cards.

1500kc per person per day will let you live very well,I am a regular traveller to Prague and can easily survive on under 1000kc per day but I seldom eat and drink in the tourist areas. Do you have a transaction free credit card like a Halifax Clarity(that's the one I use) if so use that as much as you can but there will be places you can't use it.
I would suggest you take out 5-60000Kc a bit over £200 and see how you manage with that, big purchases can be made with credit card and cash for everything else.see how you get on and if you want to just use cash then you can easily get more out the ATM. I find with debit cards the charges mount up very quickly so seldom use it and even with ATm's my debit card company has some high charges but if I take out more than around £100 then the better exchange rate from atms usually counteract the transaction fees.Check with your card issuer to charges they impose, my card Bank of Scotland charge a £1.50 transaction fee and a 2.75% foreign currency conversion fee................. and that's why I seldom use it.Btw the exchange rate has gone through the floor, earlier this year I was getting 32/£ last month I was getting 28/£ and at the moment it is around 26/£
if you doo have any Cks left just take then to Budvarka bar in the Dejvicka area of the city and put it behind the bar for me, I will use them next time I am in.

unclegus, I generally use my credit card as I have a good deal with them that all foreign transactions are free: ideally I would use it all the time. However, sadly I would need some cash for such things as public transport and one restaurant I am going to wants to be paid in cash.
Christina, you are right, I basically don't want cash other than for transportation and the odd purchase such as the restaurant mentioned above - so based on that, how much would you take out in cash for 2 ladies for a scant 3 days?
