Carnival in Venice

We are thinking about going to Venice for part of the Carnival in 2014. What do you suggest as the best time to go during the celebration?

We lived close to New Orleans for thirty years so we are very familiar with both Cajun and New Orleans Mardi Gras celebrations. We would love to experience a Venetian Carnival.

This is a complete busybody thing to do, but since everyone answered in the Lounge, which I believe is no longer searchable (?), I am going to paste those replies here.

I was there ages ago, around 1995.

We stayed at Cipriani.

The weather was horrid. Reminded me of Hogmanay in Edinburgh.

Would never go again.

We will be in Venice July 11.

I only like Venice in really hot weather.

I had the opposite experience. We went about eight or nine years ago on accident. I hadn't thought to check until after I had booked flights. I was really worried it would be too busy/crowded for me but it wasn't. Stayed in Dorsoduro, and outside of San Marco and Rialto, nothing was too crowded, but make sure to reserve for dinner. I hate hot weather and it didn't rain, so no problems in that regard. Lots of atmospheric fog, very romantic. Too bad I was with my mom!

The whole scene was easily avoided but it was fun to see the costumes and all the excitement for a bit.

I can't remember exactly when we were there. I can check

We had a fun time during Carnival last year. We had an apartment and were there 5 days. An apartment is a good idea because it is much easier and cheaper to have a kitchen available. It was a great time, parades and concerts.
i would recommend looking at the event website (just google Venice carnival). You can see a program of all that is going on. I'm not sure that the weekend before would be anything special, if you want to see it then go during the actual time.

I was there on Fat Tuesday many years ago on a day trip. I didn't plan it so I was stocked by how crowded it was. We only walked around San Marco where they just had acqua alta so the planks where still up. It was very cool to see the costumes and I got some great pictures. However with it being my first time there and with it being crowed, we ended up getting pizza at this horrible place. It was so hard and stiff like a board, I couldn't eat it. I'm sure if you stay away from the main attractions late in the day, you should have no problems. I also don't remember it being too cold and wore my early fall/spring jacket which I layered.

Thanks, Carnival is late this year. I think it is March 3, so I think this would be a good year to go. Hopefully it will not be too cold.

We have been to Venice many times and usually stay in Castello. The last several times we have stayed in a very pleasant convent, but I can see there would be advantages to staying in an apartment.

Goldens, what apartment did you stay in?

We were in Venice for two weeks in 2011 of which 5 days overlapped with Carnival. We had a great time - due in part to staying in Dorsoduro so we could choose how much we wanted to participate.

Blog link here (I love my mask!) - you can see the crowds in St. Mark's - also walking to St. Mark's was an experience. The police strung ropes on the bridges to create "lanes"

I found a fancy dress party organized by a lover of the Carnival of Venice!. The party is called "The Other Side Of The Mask". The event is going to take place in a Venetian theatre in a typical Venetian square in the historical center of the city only a few steps from the beautiful Piazza San Marco. It offers a unique setting for a unique party which the organizers promise to be a unique experience: an all included gala dinner, cocktails and with plenty of entertainment. It will be a costume ball, You can go dressed in ‘Carnival fantasy’ or period costume. For one night masked Venetian romantics, lovers, nobles and adventurers of the 1700’s will get together in an evening that promises plenty of surprises. I booked via email, you can use the link [email protected] http://www.guestinvenice.com/?p=4135

My husband and I attended the Carnival Grand Ball last weekend and we had an unforgettable evening. The food was fantastic and the entertainment even better, all of the staff were so professional. We had a great after party with the open bar and danced till late, chatted to all of the dancers and artists who were from all over the world. If we get to come to Venice Carnival next year we will certainly book one of your events. Maybe save up for the Enchanted Palace which I heard was a spectacular event. I wish we had booked for another event here as the event we did book and attended in another palace was so disappointing and not classy at all this is the link of the events:http://www.venice-carnival-italy.com/ball.php?id=44

Wow! Time travel! You attended the Grand Ball last weekend, when it's next weekend. Maybe you should edit your ads better.

Two years ago, Cameron (above) also posted something that reeks of ad copy.
