Carmen in Sevilla in September

We are still trying to purchase individual tickets to Carmen in Seville this September. We do already have a hotel room--does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand exactly how this festival of performances is going to work, but here is the contact information on the organizer, if you don't have it:

Central Information & Reservation Office
SEVILLE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL - Carmen 2004
C/ Teniente Borges 5, 41002 Seville, Spain
Telephone: +34 954 50 66 10
Fax: +34 954 22 59 49
[email protected]

I guess you could email them and ask if you can, but it would probably be good to have viewed the program and performances so you know what you want. They have a web site with a program at www.sevillafestival.org

They sort of sound like they only want to sell packages with hotels, but no harm in inquiring. It also seems that the dept. store Corte Ingles is doing some of their booking, so you could try them, also. However, upon review of their travel section www.viajeselcorteingles.es, it looks like the ticket booking form for that is the same thing you get to on the above web site, implying hotel packages.

Are you staying at a hotel that can help with this?

Does anyone know more about this event now? We will try and get some tickets to Carmen without buying the hotel package. What would be a good choice of hotel to stay in walking distance of the performances ?

My understanding is that right now, they are only selling packages of tickets with hotel included.

It seems that they might allow individual tickets later, but right now, from what I have read, you can only get them as part of the package.

If I read something different, I'll let you know.

They have just announced that the individual tickets will go on sale on May 15, in the website and through Viajes El Corte Ingles. It looks like they are putting 225.000 tickets on sale, for the different performances in the festival, not just Carmen.

Any hotel in the old town will be within walking distance of the Carmen shows, which will take place mainly in the Plaza de España in Maria Luisa Park and in the bullring, which is by the river, near the Cathedral.

Just booked a room on a high floor in the Melia Sol looking over the Maria Luisa Park (later Act of Carmen) and a few hundred yards from Plaza de Espana ( First few Acts). Is this as good an idea as it seems ? If anyone with local knowledge could please advise ? Thank you.

Olga, thanks a lot for the update. Friends of mine wanted to visit the festival, but we stopped looking after them when we saw that there were only packages with hotel included.

I'll let them know.

Sydneysteve,

Yes, the Sol Melia Sevilla hotel is next to the park and the Plaza de España. You will be able to walk 2 minutes straight out into the action of the show. It's a nice, classy business style hotel with lots of conveniences, like a big outdoor pool overlooking the park and the Plaza de España towers. I hear their buffet breakfast is amazing.
It is also convenient for the main historic district, 10 minute easy -and pretty- walk or 5 minute bus ride straight from the hotel.

Tickets for individual performances went on sale yesterday. I purchased two for the opera, but they are very expensive. The website is www.carmeninsevilla.com.

Are you sure you can buy just the Opera - Carmen ? I know they do not now require us to buy accomodation they had arranged, but it seemed to me that you have to buy three events i.e. Carmen plus Orchestral plus Flamenco or Solo Performer and spread these over three days.

I think the organisers are starting to get their act in order, as I have received a few emails suggesting they are improving internet access in English.
We will be there for only two days so it is all becoming difficult/confusing. I also do not know how they are going to manage the seating allocations after the first two acts of Carmen. From what I have seen so far these events are not being particularly well managed and, as you say, are very highly priced for good seating (which you cant get a real feel for given the background information in any case). I would be very grateful for any local knowledge ???

The tickets I bought were for the opera only... and yes, I am a bit worried about seating, as I spent quite a bit for "diamond tier" seats and really have no feel for how far away we will be from the stage. I think they offer discounts if you buy a package of three events... something like if you bought the opera and orchestra tickets, the flamenco would be discounted 10%.

Hi Chrisssy. Do you know about the timetable for Carmen ? I am rather confused by the schedule. I am trying to figure out when the two hour break for dinner is and at what time the final act concludes. Do you understand the schedule ? Thanks for your help

The opera starts at 8pm. There will be a normal intermission between Acts 2 & 3, and a two-hour intermission between Act 3 and Act 4. There will be an illumiated pedestrian walkway between the sites so that the opera-goers can stroll along to the next act, grabbing drinks, tapas, or dinner on the way to the bullring. It sounds to be a very long night..but I'm not sure exactly what time the final act will conclude.

Hi Chrissy. There seems to be more information emerging. I have received some more emails from the English Desk seeking to be of assistance. Do you know anything about the Seat types for Carmen ? I am thinking of simply going for Bronze and taking in the atmosphere because I am uncertain as to what we might get for a multiple of the price.

That's probably a smart thing to do... I have no idea how far away my seats will be, and I'm sure the tickets are overpriced... but then, it's an expensive production. I think the atmosphere is the main point of it, something not to be missed, so the bronze seats will still be enjoyable... I am really looking forward to a special evening. I've booked the Sept. 11th show (the last). I'd like to see some flamenco as well, but will probably go to a local place for that.

I tried to book again on the Cortes Ingles Site but was asked to register. When I tried to register by inserting my Australian address, I got the Spain Only response. So I could not register or get a password. I went back to the Carmen in Sevilla website and sent a secure message including all details of my seat and date request and credit card information. I then received an email saying they could not accept that and I was required to fax them a form which was attached to the email. When I opened and printed it the spacing was so small that you would need a microscope to read it so again I did my best and filled it out and then printed the whole page by hand as a backup. I sincerely hope the Festival is more successful than my experience with the form submission formalities. I know Carmen starts at 8pm and by my calculations the last act must conclude close to sunrise ! I have decided to book the whole of the following day on a train between Seville and Barcelona via Madrid to rest.
