Car rental on Mykonos and Santorini

We want to rent a car on Mykonos and Santorini. The websites for our hotels mention that they can arrange a rental but no one responds to my email requests for information. I will try faxing them, but in the meantime, what are some suggestions?

We will be arriving by ferry so should we take a taxi to the hotel and let them do it or maybe try to rent something as soon as we arrive at the pier? We will be in Santorini 2 nights and Mykonos 3 nights. Any suggestions for local car rental agencies?

We will be there the second week of October. I know we can use only taxis, but we like having a car. Thanks

You can contact Spiridakos Rent-A-Car on Santorini through their website. They have an office right at the port. If you need an automatic transmission you definitely need to book ahead as they are scarce, and trying to drive an unfamiliar car with a manual transmission up the steep zig-zag road from the dock to the main road above could be a nightmare if you aren't comfortable driving a manual. If you're American or Canadian be sure to go to your local AAA/CAA office to pick up an International Driving Permit, no test or membership required.

If you want to wait until you get to your hotel to rent a car you can take a taxi or bus from the port. There are rental agencies in every village.

I used this website: http://www.santorini-car-rental.com/ for initial enquiry then called them to confirm.

Renting a car on Santorini isn't necessary if you don't mind using the bus system, which is very good, but it is certainly NOT a waste of time. Just the opposite in fact. Having a car saves you the time it takes waiting for buses and allows you to move around the island at your own pace without being forced to backtrack to the bus terminal in Fira to catch another bus to a different area of the island, which is a very time-consumng and time-wasting process if you want to cover a lot of ground on any given day. Many rental companies will allow you to drop the car off at the ferry port when it's time to move to Mykonos, which also allows you to keep your luggage with you (and securely locked up) after you check out of your hotel.

We waited to book a car on all the Greek Islands until we arrived and then the hotels arranged them. Easy and inexpensive, cars dropped off and picked up at hotels.
This advice was given by our Greek travel agent in Athens.

Thanks for all of the replies. I finally heard back from both hotels and they will arrange for cars for us. I will compare the price they quoted with a few of the agencies listed. I definitely agree with brotherleelove. I don't like waiting for buses and since we are going in October at the end of the season, I would think the bus schedule would be cut back. I will post a trip report when I return. Thank to all.

You absolutely need a rental car in Santorini, as buses are really horrible...always full and never on time...you can get rates directly from a company i have used a few times without a problem at Santorinieasyrent (one word )

Pity they won't archive these old threads to "read only."
